Julian Lennon: Valotte (1984)
Atlantic Records
Recording engineer, record producer, violinist, composer, and co-founder of A & R recording studio Phil Ramone (January 5, 1934 - March 30, 2013)
" Kodachrome "
Muscle Shoals Sound Studio in Sheffield, Alabama :: Produced by Paul Simon and Phil Ramone
In an interview conducted in November 2008( One on One ), Paul Simon said that what he had in mind when writing the song was to call it " Going Home ". However, finding this would have been " too conventional ", he came up with " Kodachrome ", because of its similar sound and larger innovative potential. He also refers to its first line as the " most interesting " part of the song. That first line goes, " When I think back on all the crap I learned in high school..."
When I think back on all the crap I learned in high school It's a wonder I can think at all And though my lack of education hasn't hurt me none I can read the writing on the wall
Kodachrome They give us those nice bright colors Give us the greens of summers Makes you think all the world's a sunny day, oh yeah I got a Nikon camera I love to take a photograph So mama, don't take my Kodachrome away
If you took all the girls I knew when I was single And brought 'em all together for one night I know they'd never match my sweet imagination Everything looks worse in black and white
21-year-old Julian Lennon's debut album was released on 15 October 1984.
Produced by Phil Ramone (who Lennon approached after hearing Billy Joel's 1982 album The Nylon Curtain), Valotte received mostly negative reviews when it was firs released, and the first single (in the US), the title track, sold slowly. It was a different story in England.
"Too Late for Goodbyes" was released in the UK in September 1984, and by November had peaked at #6. It was released in the US in January 1985 and peaked at #5 in March. "Valotte" would also reach the Top Ten, peaking at #9.
Sam Peckinpah directed music videos for both singles.
The album peaked at #17 in the US and #20 in the UK, and sold more than 1 million copies.

Mr. Ramone is mostly known these days thanks to a multitude of the late career blockbuster galas he produced for a lot of musicians. The fact we find him on Ray Charles' Genius Loves Company should make us nod, we expect him to be there. Then again, I keep asking myself what his style of producing is. I mean, why did Ray Charles work with him back then? One could claim Mr. Ramone transformed the tunes he produced into something quite lush. There's nothing wrong with that, one notices his LPs sound expensive. However, they have to be like this, they represent most of their players' last hurrah. We can certainly sense Genius Loves Company in this view, Mr. Charles died before the platter, which celebrated his incredible career, got released.
