21-year-old Julian Lennon's debut album was released on 15 October 1984.
Produced by Phil Ramone (who Lennon approached after hearing Billy Joel's 1982 album The Nylon Curtain), Valotte received mostly negative reviews when it was firs released, and the first single (in the US), the title track, sold slowly. It was a different story in England.
"Too Late for Goodbyes" was released in the UK in September 1984, and by November had peaked at #6. It was released in the US in January 1985 and peaked at #5 in March. "Valotte" would also reach the Top Ten, peaking at #9.
Sam Peckinpah directed music videos for both singles.
The album peaked at #17 in the US and #20 in the UK, and sold more than 1 million copies.
"Too Late for Goodbyes" is the first single from Julian Lennon's debut album Valotte. It featured the harmonica of Jean "Toots" Thielemans, and it was a top-10 hit in the U.K. and U.S. Recorded in February 1984, it wouldn’t be released in the US until a year later. It ultimately peaked at #1 on March 16, 1985 at the U.S. Adult Contemporary chart. The music video for the song was directed by Sam Peckinpah, To date, it is the most successful song of Lennon's career.
