Peter Orner, Am I Alone Here?
My old teacher and friend Andre Dubus would often say: 'You got to walk around with it. Walk around with it. You’ll get it.' He meant, in a sense, that sometimes you got to get up and leave the story, walk around, live a little—and when you least expect it, there’s your ending.

No people has ever loved a city like Chicago’s Jews, I am convinced. From Saul Bellow and Isaac Rosenfield to William Goldman to David Mamet to our boy Rich Cohen, and my most recent discovery, Peter Orner, it’s almost endearing to see how ingrained they are in their roots and how each of their stories is as much a story of characters as it is a story of place.
