We also live in a very small one.
Sometimes it can be a lot to take in.
You are insignificant and the most important person all at once.
...you’re still trying to figure out how that works.
At first it might feel like you're chest is tightening and you're throat is closing up and you can’t breathe.
Take as many chances as you need. There’s plenty to go around.
While you’re at it, take a look in the mirror.
Consider your eyebrows that never match up.
You're eyes that always seem to wander.
The corners of your mouth that have too often turned down when they could’ve been turning up - but let’s move on to your ears, always willing to listen to a good story and you're hair which you’re never quite sure if it matches your personality or not but you’ve learned to love anyway.
The point is that you’re a person - made up of every moment that you’ve lived through.
You have parts to yourself that you haven’t even discovered yet, and parts that you don’t dare let others discover. Parts that shine as brilliantly as the sun, and parts that prefer to live in shadow. You carry these parts tucked away inside you, and occasionally, they pop out to say hello.
You’ve come so far, and sometimes it’s easy to be afraid of how far you have left to go or how far you could’ve gone but didn’t. It’s easy to focus on your shortcomings and worry about the future.
Instead, take a moment to appreciate yourself. We both know you don’t do it enough.
You’re this one person in this gargantuan miniscule upside down backwards world. And you control it.
Don’t get me wrong, there are an infinite amount of things that are out of your hands.
But you control your thoughts. You still own your mind.
You control how you see the world.
When the world feels too big, too vast -
Like it could swallow you whole and leave no trace behind -
Make it as big or as small as you like.
Your universe could consist of one magical night at a concert with a friend or two.
Or it could be the microcosm that is your high school.
Or you could stretch it out farther and farther until Earth is no more than a spec, but you are surrounded by a million pinpricks of light from a plethora of galaxies and you are glowing.
You don’t get to choose the world you end up in.
But you get to choose the world you’ll live in.
Whether it’s a world where you’re on a plane every other day to another show or a meeting of leaders and big dreamers.
Or it’s a world where your dog is your number one fan, and you’re content to sip lemonade while slipping into the comforting pages of a good book on a hot summer day.
You, who is made up of both little and big, adventure and procrastination, right side up and inside out, are in charge of your world.
Focus on the big, or focus on the small.
Whatever it takes for you to breathe evenly again.
