Gryffindor: “You need that moved, I can move that.” Always down for drinks after the show. Fully believe in “the show must go on.” Memorizes the songs and calls from memory. Drinks a red eye or red bull. Loves rehearsals and tech but running the show is boring. Follows the spirit of the Equity handbook. Instagrams of group photos. Reports bootleggers to house management and the producer. Happy to work anywhere.

Hufflepuff: Loves every part of the process. Will comfort crying actors. Puts the actors needs first. Actually gives opening night gifts. Not always a great team leader but a great team member. Doesn’t drink coffee but can make it. Loves running the show. Calls Equity to clarify everything. Instagrams of props. Kindly asks people not to bootleg. Prefers to work regionally or theatre for a young audience.

Ravenclaw: Knows every line in the play. Prettiest paperwork you’ve ever seen. Calls from the score. Drinks all the coffee. Takes mentoring interns and PAs to heart. Loves the dramaturgical aspect of rehearsals. Loves rehearsals for new plays. Follows the letter of the law of the Equity rule book. Instagrams of their book. Reports bootlegs to the producer every time they see one. Works where new plays are being produced.

I always enjoy a good cup of tea. Part of that is because I have a low caffeine tolerance. I can’t drink a lot of coffee, so in the morning I drink tea.

Some people may belittle tea as nothing more than hot leaf juice, but to me it’s an experience. The experience of burning off taste buds when you drink it too soon. The experience of holding the hot mug in your hands on a cold morning, the aromatic steam wafting up into your nose. The experience of total relaxation when you take that first, perfectly steeped, perfectly temperatured sip. This morning ritual never fails to wash away any residual stress. That’s the tangible experience.

With a good tea, there is a transcendent experience, too. When I drink a good cup of sencha, my imagination drifts to a quiet Japanese garden with a trickling creek and the gentle strumming of a shamisen in the distance. When I drink a strong cuppa Earl Grey, I like to imagine I’m sitting down to tea with the Earl of Grantham, wearing a beautiful Edwardian gown and speaking in an ever so proper British accent. When I sip my warm rooibos swirled with milk and sugar, I dream of the South African savanna from which it came, its wide kingdom cloaked in sunlight.

The courtesan named was named Phryne and she was indeed a renowned beauty, and was indeed was put on trial for a capital crime. And yes, the sum of her defense consisted of her stripping in court (helped by her lover/defendant) and asking the jury (all males) if they were prepared to destroy this. 

But this is actually a very interesting case of Values Dissonance - the capital crime she was accused of was blasphemy. In Ancient Greek society, exceptional beauty was a sign of favor from the gods, and they took the idea that beauty indicated goodness with great seriousness. They even called their nobles Kaloi k'Agathoi, “the Beautiful and the Good.” 

So by showing off her great physical beauty, Phryne was being very clever indeed, her argument essentially being “How could I possibly commit blasphemy if the gods have given me this body?“
