When the dictionary doesn’t reflect the world
Is it "fan fiction" or "fanfiction"? Depends on who you ask. Also, on what the dictionary counts as "usage". Which in turn creates a really interesting power dynamic between those who actually read and write fanfiction (for most of us there's no space there) and those who write about "fan fiction" (academics, journalists, etc.). My LEAST favorite autocorrect thing is when a word is in english, is spelled correctly, and is even being used correctly but google autocorrect is like "no, sorry, this word is slightly less common then this word which is similar in length and vastly different in meaning"
And it takes approximately five tries to get it to accept the perfectly legitimate word when there shouldn't even be a problem in the first place. I know what I'm about google. Back off.
Anyway, this is also how I feel about people who think literally shouldn't mean seriously

Once I had a friend that would correct your grammar during a conversation or over text, so I started intentionally using the wrong forms of their/there/the’re and your/you’re with her.
This holiday season, get a real personality and don’t be a linguistic prescriptivist! The phenomenon of language is much bigger than your rules and sardonic asterisks. If a relative or friend or stranger online says something that offends your carefully-constructed grammatical sensibilities, take a moment to consider the value of your contribution.
