What Is Peer Counseling?
In peer counseling, it is peers helping peers. The peer must mediate between the students to get the problems solved. These counselors assist students who do not have campus counselors. As an adolescent, it would be easier talking about the issues to a person of your age and with a similar mindset. Rather than adults, peer counseling would be effective in helping an adolescent to take the first step in addressing any problem. Before meeting a counselor, it would be more advisable to understand what is peer counseling. It is a process that involves one-to-one interaction between the members of a group. Such groups have the same mindset and many other things in common.
Help And Relate To People
Peer counseling is helping fellow students. It is the way to respond, help and relate to people. The main aim is to explore thoughts, issues, concerns and feelings to get a clear understanding and get more determined to take decisions. Students experience stress in their lives. There are many issues to be dealt with like academic stress, peer pressure, the pressure to choose the career, relationship problems, body image and addiction. Everyone does not have an opportunity to meet a counselor due to many reasons. In such conditions, peer counseling is beneficial.
Deal With Issues
The counselors help in many issues like:
Improving confidence and self-esteem
Conflict resolution
More understanding with students and teachers
Adjusting to hostel life
Dealing with academic difficulties and exam stress
Many other college issues like ragging and bullying
Many students do not know what is peer counseling. After approaching the counselor, the student gets a picture of his problems and issues. Rather than advising they support, listen and give more alternatives to the students. The counselors are trained for listening, communication and basic counseling skills. They are confident and follow ethics carefully. They know their boundaries and help the student on many issues. So, they would have received the training but not have a certificate for counseling. When the student wants real counseling, they send him to the professional counselor. They understand the behavioral and emotional disturbances in a student and try to help him in many ways. In-born Qualities Required For Counselors In addition to the training, there are many qualities required to become a peer counselor:
Not intrusive and excellent listening skills
Keep information confidential
Communication skill to get deep into the thought of the student
Compassion and sensitive
Friendly
A Lot Of Solutions Provided Helping nature should be natural in the peer counselor. They can conduct campaigns about general mental health issues and try to eradicate the myths about it. Peer counseling duties vary from person to person. They help in improving the lives of the students with their assistance. They give a supportive atmosphere to the students to talk openly about their feelings. A lot of solutions are developed together for all the uncertainties and problems. Mostly all the services provided are free and also confidential. New students are given more knowledge of what is peer counseling by interactive sessions. The counselors offer empathetic and nonjudgmental ears for all types of problems.
So this happened today. Took an online course for #lgbtq safe zone training and ya boy passed with 100% size the board. It was a seriously jammed packed full of information course. But just one more thing to add to my list of certificates for my #peercounseling This course really owned my eyes to terms and issues that I either had overlooked or never really thought about. The was one section of the course that I had to "buy privileges" for $100 each and based on a 3 question per screener determined how much "money" I had to spend. I had $900 and my total was well over $1900 and it really opened my eyes to all the privileges that many don't "automatically" get even in 2020. I knew the were serious hurdles within the community but this you would never think of came up. https://www.instagram.com/p/B7XHjGmJyBc/?igshid=1neb1dp3oun15
WOULD YOU LIKE TO HAVE SOMEONE TO TALK TO? PEER-TO-PEER?
Through 1-on-1 sessions, peer counselors help students with issues regarding academics, finances, community, & also with the student’s social, professional, and personal life. Peer Counseling provides a safe space for confidentiality and trust. With the resources to help you gain the knowledge needed to make your experience at UCLA successful, peer counselors are trained to challenge students to be empowered leaders.
