I used to love the Olympics growing up.

I remember always talking about the Olympics, every four years. The excitement I got from the opening ceremonies, the matches, the athletes and the dedication they give for their sports has always been admirable.

That all changed 4 years ago. 4 years to the day actually. The night my grandfather died.

“Grown up are just kids with their hearts torn apart too many times.”

When we were growing up, we had a constant supply of how relationships are suppose to be, how commitments work, and why people fall apart. Past Andy would’ve said relationships are easy, because all that really matters was the feeling the couples have, everything else is non-essential.

Oh boy, was he wrong. And that belief lead him down a path of trials and tribulations, and he wasted a lot of nights trying to make things work when they simply did not fit.

“Nice to see how little she changed since we broke up.” Ben stated, in response to what I told him about my previous friday night with his ex and her friends. “I don’t get how some people don’t change at all in three years.”

“People don’t change.” I replied, “Well they only change under extreme circumstances, and even then the chances are they will go back to being their old self within 2 months. It’s kind of like new year resolution. On new year’s day, you’re eager to make all these changes, but if you manage to stick with it for more than 2 months, then i think that’s pretty impressive. Congrats on actually making a change…”

“Hey, i changed after the break up!” Ben interrupted. 

“Well yes, but let’s be realistic here. How much have we actually changed since three years ago?” To be entirely honest, I did struggle to come up with a list. “I guess, mmm, we started drinking scotch, thanks a lot Dawn for that, and you dress better, you’re welcome,” I kidded, “and we drink coffee now, well you do…”

“We learned how the difference between good and bad coffee, and you can make great coffee.” Ben said, with a uncertain tone that mildly questioning, “that’s change right?”

For those who follow me on twitter, or seen my Facebook page lately, you'd have realized I'm relatively obsessed with certain tv shows. And recently, that special show would be Community.

I guess there's a reason why I feel connected towards the show. One of the main reason is a character named Abed. I am a lot like him. Both of us grew up by watching television (and understanding human dynamics that way), both of us have an rather annoying habit of referring our own lives to a tv show (Yeah that's how meta Community is and myself is, deal with it). The only difference between me and Abed is he's actually in a tv show. And well… I'm not, not yet.

Perhaps I could date all this to 2006 B.C., before Community. Back in 2006, I've recently discovered Youtube, and I found this very addictive webseries called "We Need Girlfriends" and I fell in love with it. I would admit, WNG deserves its own post because of its significance in my life, but we'll get there.

The premise of WNG is:

3 recently college graduates decided to move in together after getting dumped by their long term college girlfriend. And for the next year, they experienced the life of being single: going to a theme party (which they've mistaken as a sex party), meeting and fighting over a girl, dating a girl from their past, getting someone pregnant after a meaningless one-night-stand, getting back together with the ex, etc.

Anyway, I felt very connected with that show, to a point where I even started up a youtube account just to enter an online competition for the show, and out of the thousands of contestants, i came 2nd overall. Suck it! (The youtube account itself later became a site for my adolescent outburst through vlogging).

And when that show ended in 2007, I felt a void inside me for a while, it was tough, it felt like I watched these characters grew in the past few years and they moved on with their lives, and i was left with nothing....

I remember back when I was younger, I tried to find a solution to my 'just friends' problem. I was simply sick of it. Almost every girl i approached gave me the same speech, surely there's something wrong with me (don't worry, I'm not that self-centered and blame everyone else). Maybe I look funny and don't have a symmetrical face, maybe I'm being too nice to them? 

Yeah, that has gotta be it. Because we humans always want what we can't have. By being nice to them, I'm simply showing that I'm too easy. So quick solution would be: 'Be a prick, and she'll want your dick; be brutally blunt, and you can have her *insert c bomb here*'. You're a fucking genius andy, and there I was, thinking I've solved the da vinci code of being just friends.

Then bam. Google gave me more insight. The ladder theory. Ah this was a beauty. The theory simply stated that girls mentally categorize potential mates into 2 'ladders': either friend material or date/sex material. And you're either one or the other. And by attempting to jump from the 'friend ladder' to the 'date/sex ladder'. I could risk falling into the abyss (where the rejected lives in this analogy). Hence getting slowly removed from her life.

And the sad thing was, I'm not making this shit up and I was totally buying it.
