a week goes by with no plans and misa doesn’t even text, he’s like that. it’s sort of embarrassing now that sam thinks about it, that it’s been sam pushing them to this point, but misa the one letting it happen. which is worse? the week goes by and sam hangs out with his brother, with his other friends, with misa when a group’s involved. and then misa texts, hey you free saturday?? heard the odyssey isn’t that scary :) it freaks sam the fuck out. the fact misa is reaching out, the fact it’s a movie date, the fact misa felt the need to clarify that the movie isn’t scary, the fact he sent a :) when he’s never ever sent one to sam before, like he’s worried something’s up.

misa texts a few more times, three times to be exact. are you going to schaef’s place tonight? we should hang sometime! and horrifyingly when r we running that hike back?? sam gives him cop out answers and then embarrassingly doesn’t post anything to his finsta for awhile because he doesn’t want to hurt misa’s feelings that he’s hanging out with other people. it’s like he’s ghosting a girl, but a girl he really cares about and wants to hang out with but can’t. they’ll be back thick as thieves next season anyways, the off season stuff was just getting too much.

it’s not like misa is rotting away on his own anyways. he has other friends, evident in the way misa is heavily featured in zayne’s overactive finsta. it’s different for them sam reasons, because zayne’s built different, built less delicately than sam wants to admit that he is. he can post breakfast with hubby, and you won’t believe what we did after this ;), and love of my life, under every photo of misa he wants. it’s different. the stuff with lardis, sam doesn’t understand as much.

sam does pop up at schaef’s get together and eyes the way lardis makes misa’s drink, and brushes off the patio seat for him, and then ruffles his hair gently. someone makes a shit joke going is he your pet or your girlfriend, lardo? misa laughs and lardis doesn’t. he raises his eyebrow and goes he’s mikey. it explains fuck all and dispels any of the humour around it. he should have said both and thrown out his hands all sleazy like, that’s what sam would have done. but nick lardis doesn’t take the easy exit, doesn’t turn it around. he kisses misa on the cheek when he’s had a little too much and then takes the side closest to the road when they walk down to their uber. sam watches and watches and fuck, can he do that? he’s not so sure.

he hates sam more after, in the tunnel between warmups, when green and white tarped boys are squeezing past each other in opposite directions, dickinson somehow finds room for his massive tennis-ball head. he’s chirping somebody behind him, loud as fuck, then misa appears and sam shifts sideways just enough to bump him.

“dickie,” misa greets him, smiling like sam didn’t manufacture the whole collision. machiavellian piece of shit.

sam grins back. misa keeps walking. sam turns to watch him.

gross.

months later, they’re all in the czech republic for the hlinka gretzky cup, winning gold in ot, temporary camaraderie erasing the fact that some of them aren't actually bro. a photographer is trying to wrangle all the guys into a photographable bunch. misa is in the middle of the pictures with his medal crooked and his mullet sticking out under his hat. malcolm is tucked against him, talking directly into his ear. marty is two spots over, watching misa laugh instead of looking at the camera.

misa, obviously, has no idea that eveyone is revolving around him like he's their own little sun.

then dickinson starts working his way closer.

“this is the big one, eh?” sam says.

misa looks at him, big dark eyes, same dedication to his goals as he's always got. “not yet.”

no shit, there's only one big one and they all know what it is. zayne watches sam’s face light up like misa has said something brilliant instead of the most misa thing possible.

zayne watches him joke with misa, watches misa answer him all earnest and interested, watches sam show his teeth as if making mis laugh is an accomplishment. when the photographer tells them to squeeze in, sam lifts an arm toward misa’s shoulders.

zayne smacks it down.

“keep your hands to yourself, dickinson.”

sam stares at him. “the fuck?”

“you heard me.”

“zayne,” misa says, already laughing.

of course he thinks it’s funny. he thinks everybody is nice. he thinks eveyone is his boy and not trying to do something unnamed but obviously evil.

sam tries again when the flashes start.
