misa the type of guy who grew up saying i love you to his friends, because it was true and nice and felt good, and then stopped abruptly at age fourteen because that shit’s embarrassing apparently. then reworks the terms to get away with love you, dropped i, it’s cleaner. this lasts from ages 14-17 where he then starts yelling i love you at zayne across the saginaw player lot every day, just the two of the yelling it back and forth at each other and laughing. misa gives it out pretty easy anyways. there’s a brief total ban on i love yous again after the nhl draft that doesn’t last. and then he gets to san jose, warms up to sam quick and starts throwing it around on a random tuesday.
misa’s just like that, easy with his words, and zayne was too, all easy affection. sam can’t quite do it, laughs it off, and says quit it with that shit, man and white knuckles the drive home. doesn’t care, misa can say whatever he wants, doesn’t think about how misa ends his calls with luke, and his mom, and nick lardis, and zayne, all the same way.
love you! love you! i love you, bro. love you, talk soon. love you foreva, man. love you! i love you! yeah, love you. got to go, i love you.
sam pats his back and sometimes caresses his cheek, quick and bold. bites his tongue. hears misa say it for the umpteenth time and nods along. love you! sam throws it back in march and misa doesn’t do anything different, pats his knee and gets out of the car. just words, sam tells himself. just words, he tells barks and cowboy when he ends a call with misa in front of them. just words, he tells his dad when misa stops by for dinner. just words, he tells zayne in a rink parking lot who gives him this odd look like he’s throwing off his whole day, no man, it’s not. and sam watches them scream it back and forth at each other while he leads the charge to his own car.
i love you! i love you! i love you! i love you! i love you! i love you! i love you! i love you! i love you!
