⁉️"Why is my daughter representing herself as a black girl in all her avatars?"A parent asked this question this morning. ‼️This took me back a couple of years ago where in research my colleagues reported a surge of tweens and teens especially white boys building their avatars as black boys. ‼️On the surface, the figures & facts were “more white kids are representing themselves as black kids in their avatars ” ✅This supported observations I’d made whilst working in a children’s prison where there was a rife teen culture of “wanna be black”. 👉🏾Anyway, back to the research. ‼️Most colleagues concluded this is down to "image and identity crisis in teen years." 😉But not me… Intuitively I knew there was something more. I wanted to dig deeper, so I leaned in and listened some more. ‼️Turns out there’s more to the facts & figures, and this was just surface information, which often is the case with figures and facts in research. ✅The leaning in and listening yielded something way deeper from this one young person. 👉🏾Me: Tell me more about your choice of avatar? I asked soulfully and smiling, genuinely interested. 👉🏾Boy: “You know miss, in art, when you mix all the colours the colour you get is black. So black means everyone put together and that means I'm everyone, and I'm all powerful” ‼️How’s that for wisdom from the mouths of babes.!! 💯Now you know why as parenting teenagers coach I'm so insistent on leaning in and listening …. ❗️Have you joined Raising Remarkable Teenagers Movement?
