New Delhi is the capital city of the Republic of India. It hosts the government’s legislature, executive and judiciary arms of the government. And its the focus of today's #GlobeFacts. Delhi has been inhabited since 6th It has been the capital of many empires, and this is the reason this city has been ransacked and built many times. The city was more recently founded by George V, Emperor of India during the Delhi Durbar of 1911. The city was designed by the British architects Sir Edwin Lutyens and Sir Herbert Baker. It started serving its functions as the country's capital in 1931 after inauguration by the then India's Viceroy Lord Irwin. Delhi is one of the greenest cities in the world. Surprised? According to statistics, it has about 20% of its landmass covered by forests. This is a no mean feat to accomplish for a country that is home to a fifth of the world's population. The entire public transport system in New Delhi runs on environment-friendly Compressed Natural Gas. Five of the original 14 gates of the original walled city of Delhi are still standing. They include; i. Ajmeri Gate: Facing Ajmer in Rajasthan; ii. Lahori Gate: Facing Lahore in Pakistan; iii. Kashmiri Gate: Pointing North to Kashmir; iv. Delhi Gate: Road to earlier cities of Delhi; v. Turkman Gate: Named after pious saint Hazrat Shah Turkam. New Delhi's Khari Baoli Market is Asia's largest wholesale spice market. It also might be the largest in the world. Delhi's Lotus Temple is one among the 8 Bahai Temples of worship. The Lotus Temple is the only Bahai temple in whole of Asia. The famous Qutub Minar which was built by Qutub -ud-din-Aibak is the tallest brick minaret you can find in the world. After Fateh Burj in Mohali, Qutub Minar is also the second tallest minar in the world. One of the weird facts about Delhi... there is a museum especially dedicated to toilets.. showcasing toilets from ancient time to present day. The museum name is, “Sulabh International Museum of Toilets”. Pictured : an 80cm Curve in Glacial Blue in progress. More #IndiaFacts tomorrow! Back to Estonia with todays #GlobeFacts. Saaremaa Island, also called Saare in German, in Swedish Ösel, Russian Sarema. It is the largest of the islands in the Muhu archipelago that divides the Baltic Sea from the Gulf of Riga. Located at the important seaways, Saaremaa has been familiar to seafarers for a long time. Saaremaa was a land in its own right, in some historians’ opinion the centre of a prehistoric maritime state, which has an important role to play in the interaction between the West and East. Anyone who sailed from London to Novgorod, saw the largest Baltic island on the horizon. #Saaremaa took its share, looting many a beautiful ship. Both in Scandinavian Sagas and in the Chronicle of Henry the Livonian numerous references have been made to Osilian piracy. The island is low-lying and is composed largely of limestones and dolomites. The island was occupied in 1227 by the Brothers of the Sword, who founded a bishopric there. It came under Danish (1559), Swedish (1645), and Russian (1721) rule before becoming part of Estonia in 1918. On the south coast is the main city, Kuressaare (Kingisepp). Saaremaa is connected by causeway to the neighbouring island of Muhu. Economic activities include agriculture, livestock rearing, and fishing. The majority of the population is Estonian (97%). The biggest minority nationality is Russian, comprising 2% of the inhabitants. Compared to the Republic of Estonia on the whole, the population of Saare County and particularly of Kuressaare town is younger, whereas the number of the retired people is considerably smaller. Islanders themselves have recently stated ‘What could be better than holidays on Saaremaa? The islands off the coast are virtual dreamlands, unlike anything in Europe. Most romantic landscape dotted with windmills, thatched cottages and sleepy fishing villages.' Globes : www.bellerbyandco.com | #EstoniaFacts
Alex readying his paint brush to continue the land shading on this 80cm globe in Ocean Blue. When it's finished it ships to Germany! But let's get back to #GlobeFacts Latvia #🇱🇻 III. The tailor Jacob W. Davis was born Jākobs Jufess in Riga and emigrated to the US as a young man in 1854. In 1870, he was asked by a customer to make a strong pair of trousers for her woodcutter husband – his creation would become the template for modern denim jeans, and two years later, with help from Levi Strauss, he patented the product. Basketball is Latvia’s de facto national summer sport (it’s ice hockey in winter). Notable Latvians include Uļjana Semjonova, a 6 foot 11 inch former basketball player who led TTT Riga to 12 consecutive European titles between 1964 and 1975. She was the first non-American woman to be inducted into the NBA Hall of Fame. Another Riga native, Aleksandrs Laime, was the first recorded human to reach Venezuela's Angel Falls, in 1949. It has its own waterfalls too! Venta Rapid in #Kuldīga is the widest waterfall in Europe – stretching up to to 270 metres depending on the season. It’s not as spectacular as it sounds, however, as it is just a couple of metres high. Black Balsam is a traditional liquer made using 24 different plants, flowers, buds, juices, roots, oils and berries prepared in oak barrels. It is considered to be a good cold remedy and according to legend Catherine the Great became ill during a visit to Latvia – but was cured after drinking it. Continued tomorrow #LatviaFacts. Research suggests that north-south positions on maps have psychological consequences. In general, north is associated with richer people, more expensive real estate, and higher altitude, while south is associated with poorer people, cheaper prices, and lower altitude (the "north-south bias"). When participants were presented with south-up oriented maps, this north-south bias disappeared. Common English idioms support the notion that many English speakers conflate or associate north-with-up and south-with-down (e.g., "heading up north" or "down south"), a conflation that can only be understood as learned by repeated exposure to a particular map-orientation convention. Related idioms used in popular song lyrics provide further evidence for the pervasiveness of "north-south bias" among English speakers, in particular with regard to wealth. Examples include, using "Uptown" to mean "high class or rich" (as in Uptown Girl by Billy Joel), or using "Downtown" to convey lower socioeconomic status.. as in Bad, Bad Leroy Brown by Jim Croce. A notable exception to this thesis is the North-South divide in England, where the north of the country is generally seen as less affluent and with less job opportunities and the south having more of both. Cultural diversity and media literacy educators use south-up oriented world maps to help students viscerally experience the frequently disorienting effect of seeing something familiar from a different perspective. Having students consider the privileged position given to the Northern hemisphere (especially Europe and North America) on most world maps can help students confront their more general potential for culturally biased perceptions. Duck egg blue oceans on an almost complete Mini Desk Globe as we continue with #GlobeFacts Île Amsterdam III Despite its isolation, Île Amsterdam was reached as early as 1522 by the explorer Juan Sebastián Elcano during his circumnavigation of the world for Spain The island received its name in 1633 when the Dutch captain Anthonie van Diemen, he of Van Diemen’s Landfame, named the island for his ship Nieuw Amsterdam It was not until 1696 that anyone actually bothered to land on the island (another Dutchman, Willem de Vlamingh) and it took until 1792 before it was thoroughly surveyed by the French navigators Bruni d’Entrecasteaux and Jean-Michel Huon de Kermadec during their search for the vanished French explorer Jean-François de La Pérouse By this time, the island was already known as a place for sealing, fishing, and shipwrecks due to its location along the Africa-Australia shipping route The first intentional attempt at settling#ÎleAmsterdam (notwithstanding the people marooned on the island for various lengths of time) occurred in January 1871 when an expedition set out from Réunion to establish a farm and cattle ranch; the colony failed and the group returned to Réunion that August Even with this attempt at settlement, France did not formally claim Île Amsterdam or its neighbour Île Saint-Paul until October 1892, and it was not until New Year’s Eve 1949 that France established the current base on the island While the island has only been inhabited permanently for the past seven decades, the human impact over the centuries has been huge Formerly lushly forested, the native trees of Île Amsterdam, the phylica, were nearly completely wiped out between the 1790s and 1870s by a series of bush fires and later by the cattle left behind in the failed 1871 colonisation attempt There are now efforts ongoing to replenish the forests, which had been reduced to a few dozen hectares at one point Hundreds of feral cattle still roam the island to this day, along with other introduced animals such as mice, rats, and cats Continued tomorrow with part IV www.bellerbyandco.com
The Outback covers most of Australia. It neither has a specific size, nor a specific location. Outback is a term that is used for any sparsely populated regions of Australia.
Less than 10 percent of Australians live outside the urban cities and towns that line along the coasts.
The Australian Outback spans several thousand kilometres from east to west, and from north to south. When overseas visitors mention the Outback they usually refer to the area near Alice Springs and Uluru / Ayers Rock. This region is located in the middle of the Australian continent and is often called "the red centre"... but it is only a very small part of the Outback...
The Outback covers several climate zones and experiences a wide range of temperatures. Temperatures in the central deserts can sore as high as 50°C (120F) on summer days, and drop below freezing to -10°C (15F) during winter nights. Temperatures in the tropical Outback regions are less extreme.
The Outback receives a surprising amount of rain. Even the central desert regions get on average 200 - 250 mm of rain a year.
The longest stretch of a straight railway track (487 km) crosses the Nullarbor Plain from South Australia into Western Australia. It is part of the transcontinental railway line from Sydney to Perth.
South of the railway you'll also find the longest stretch of straight bitumen road, 146.6 kms without a bend..
The 5531 km dingo fence runs from South Australia through New South Wales to Queensland, and it is of course, the world's longest fence
