I am an AMAB trans woman who was recently diagnosed with osteoporosis. One of the suggested causes was naturally low testosterone production, so one of the suggested treatments is testosterone supplements. What's a good way to tell my doctor that I'm hoping to transition and go on estrogen therapy, given the physiological restrictions and the fact that he might assume my gender dysphoria is a symptom of having low testosterone? Also, how on earth do i know my dysphoria isn't hormonal?
it might be reasonable to go ahead and start estrogen now (which also is protective of bones) versus starting testosterone. if that’s not a good option, you might opt for another class of bone-building meds (bisphosphonates), but with poor hormone profile, they won’t be as effective as they could be.
There’s no evidence to support that dysphoria is caused by or aggravated by low T, (despite scientists trying to find evidence) so anyone who tries to link the two is going off old, outdated guessing versus actual science-based medicine. what 2019 medicine tells us is that your dysphoria is NOT caused by low T. mod mayhem
so what if i have osteoporosis my children will be beautiful which is more than can be said for you harold

Just a couple non soy vegan sources of calcium i’ve found super effective as someone with many bone issues:
Super random but i had a conversation yesterday at my Saturday volunteer shift with my line manager (who is aware of my health issues) who was very confused why i wouldn't have milk in my tea because “don’t you need milk with your bones” and this is definitively not the first time iv’e had conversations like that so i thought i would list a couple cheap vegan sources of calcium in case it might be at all helpful to any other vegan spoonie, or well any vegan really that may just stumble across this post cause bones are important and all that jazz! (i’m listing non soy sources just because I personally don’t get on fab with soy due to my conditions but hey of soy isn't a problem then absolutely its a fab source of calcium!)
~ Orange juice (And apple juice but orange juice has more calcium per glass)
~ Almond, hemp and rice milks (supermarkets own brand almond milks are usually the cheapest of these i’ve found).
~Bread (In the UK all bread has to be fortified with calcium, I just buy own brand breads as they are cheaper than others like kingsmill and hovis though i make sure to check the label that its vegan)
~ Red and white beans (I have a shops worth of canned beans in my cupboards I eat them soo much! super cheap and easy to make stuff with!)
~Oatmeal (I eat oatmeal pretty much every morning and its the cheapest breakfast ive found that also has a great amount of calcium and other great stuff in! bulk buying is definitely cheaper than buying the sachets and I've found portioning them out into little zip bags works just as well!)
~ Leafy green veggies (Frozen veggies like kale and spinach i’ve found generally to be cheaper than fresh veggies and they have an impressive amount of calcium in which I didn't know for ages but am super happy about!)
~ Baked Beans (who knew right! baked beans on toast equals great source of calcium as well as being super affordable and yummy!)
