Unpopular opinion on modern opera singers and modern technique?
(Especially vs. old school because I guess that’s the comparison everyone makes)
my unpopular (possibly?) opinion: can we stop trying to compare modern and old school singers, please? voices are voices regardless of when they’re from, and besides, recording techniques and the types of demands placed on singers vary so widely across time period anyway. you’ve got good old school voices, bad old school voices, good modern voices, and bad modern voices. one!!! is!!! not!!! inherently!!! better!!! or!!! worse!!! than!!! the!!! other!!!
Ever since I started taking classical singing lessons at the Conservatory, I developed the habit of stim-singing; basically stimming by singing the same notes over and over again, or vocalizing improvised melodies, sometimes with consonants, sometimes without. Yes, it’s basically a form of vocal stimming. But oh well. At any rate, in a somewhat-distant future (if this future even comes to happen), I will still be stimming, but at least I’ll be doing so operatically!
Half of opera people: GOOD SINGING > GOOD ACTING
Other half of opera people: GOOD SINGING < GOOD ACTING
Me, a heartfelt dumbass: some singers are better at making the audience feel Things™ via their beautiful singing and understanding of the music, others are better at doing that through their poignant acting and chemistry onstage, and I think this diversity is what makes the art form so beautiful.
