How do you guys deal with what's in the news?
I feel like I have a responsibility to keep up with what is going on in the world, keep up with human rights issues, etcetera.
However, almost every single time I end up on, say, the BBC's website, the news I read leaves me feeling sad, angry or disgusted, and not in a way that would galvanize me to try and do something about whatever despicable shit the article is about. It just makes me feel like shit.
How do you guys approach the question of how one should stay informed? Is it okay to not keep abreast of every injustice taking place every day, or is it willful ignorance? At what point does "keeping informed" just turn into self-flagellation, and how would you go about keeping a balance between your emotional well-being and your awareness of the issues out there? Don't feel like you have to answer all of that, or even much of it! I'm just really eager (desperate?) to know what other peoples' experience/relationship with the news is.
