Leaders, Liars, and Leeches
It is when we hurt that we learn - Steve Maraboli
Time has come to identify people with more accurate and deserving titles.
Day after day, we see the word ‘Leader’ used with those who consistently do the exact opposite of what a leader is expected to do — to inspire growth and progress of communities. Instead, these so-called leaders are busy playing with nuclear tests (Kim Jong Un) and most immature tweets shunning diplomacy at all levels (Donald Trump), and thousands of other similar hate mongers on grass root levels in our daily lives. Journalism is one of the four strong pillars of any democracy and civil society with law-and-order in ensuring free-and-fair information, justice, and safety of human rights. If our trusted journalists will continue using the title Leaders for these hate mongers, who continue to use the Colonial British atrocity of Divide-and-Rule, there is no hope for future generations to understand the difference between Leaders and Megalomaniacs. Identifying a tyrant as a tyrant is the first step towards refusing his tyranny. [Side note: It is an irony that many who were once enslaved by the British are now governed by their local politicians who use the exact same Divide-and-Rule and continue to destroy the unity to remain in power, but there is little that can be done to stop them. Dark times are these!]
Then, some beautiful liars live among us and destroy the very fabric of trust among humans on a daily basis. I call them beautiful because the way they present themselves to us is so pious, spiritual, kind and pure that we cannot even fathom they could be lying to us. We just believe every word they say, even if at times our brain questions their intention or reason. They will make you believe they are in it with you for a deeper or is it higher, level of connection and nothing more. They will tell you over and again what you can improve about yourself but will give you a perfect ‘reason’ (read as a bullshit excuse) for how they are doing something they are doing that contradicts their ‘high-horse’ preaching. They will use every opportunity to drive your actions in their favor by taking you on a constant guilt-trip. They literally make you feel that everything that is their problem is either your fault or you are the only one who can solve it for them. At your own cost. Once they are done with you, or you are no more beneficial to their ulterior motives, you will be told, they need some time to process things. Sounds like an Ex, who took everything but never gave anything in return and still blamed you for everything? Yeah, that is how a deceptive friend/affiliate/agent operates, and that is how they make you feel despite walking all over you and destroying every particle of trust you may have had.
Finally, there are those who reside pretty much in your pocket, sucking the blood, money, and soul out of you as if they own the eternal rights to your existence and hard earned money and everything you own in life. Often they will come in your life at a time when you are vulnerable and seeking to be hugged just to make you feel better. They have probably already had an eye on you and were waiting for an opportunity when you will have a weak moment and will begin trusting them enough to let them in your inner circle. The moment they are in, the freeloading begins. But wait, they will almost always offer to bear the cost of their share of things. It is just they will always have an excuse ready to convince you to offer to pay for them and that you are okay for them to pay you back later. The later never arrives. The fun part is, in due course, they will begin telling you how to be smart with your money, belongings, services, and compassion. They will tell you how should be wiser with who you trust, all this while using you as an ATM or blank-check of sorts. By the way, they will more likely than not, have the second quality mentioned above — of being pathological liars. They will blame their past friendships, business relationships, and even family to gain your sympathy and ‘understanding,’ so you continue giving them all they need to get their purpose served. Here is the smartest thing they will do — they will make you pay for problems of others in their life like it was your responsibility. While you are in the heat of the moment, you will feel they are saying, ‘Oh no, you don’t have to do that’ but they will create enough antics around you to make sure you are the one paying, and they are the one doing the lip-service and benefitting from both ends. They get someone else to be grateful to them, and you to help that someone else yet you will feel as if you performed a duty you should have.
These ‘leaders, liars and leeches’ will impact your personal lives, careers and professional reputation. The sooner you recognize them, the faster you will be able to get rid of them. Remember, it is not how famous or well networked a person is but what their intentions are and how genuinely they value you as you have valued them, makes them worthy of being a friend, partner or a liaison. Do whatever, don’t let the LLL take you for a lollypop ride to your own destruction.
