Pub Sign, Montagu Pyke, Soho, London, 2010.
The picture seems to capture the essence of a plutocrat in late stage monopoly capitalism. Actually Pyke was an early cinema impresario, and the pub was once a cinema. After being charged with manslaughter in 1915, Pyke lost the cinema and the venue became a club space, eventually the Marquee Club which was a famed first for jazz, later rhythm and blues, and finally rock music. Among other well known artists and bands which played there, Pink Floyd had its initial bookings at the club. The space was converted to a pub in the 1990s with an unusual internal layout not at all like most London pubs.
