They landed in a field beside the Potters' property. Monty helped Evan and Barty carry the still-unconscious Remus back to the house. Remus was going to be livid when he was revived. Regulus was pretty livid himself. Something had felt off about Sirius. He’d been Sirius, but at the same time, he hadn’t. He’d been cold and heartless, just like their mother. He’d need to figure out what was going on before he tried again.
They laid Remus out on the sofa, and Effie woke him. He jumped off the sofa in a fit of rage.
“NO!!!!” He roared and tried to take off for the front door. James used his broad chest and shoulders to stop Remus in his tracks. But Remus is far stronger than any of them and pushed him aside. Regulus moved into his path and stared at him, daring him to move him. “Move, Regulus, I need to get Sirius out,” Remus growled. Regulus glared at him.
“Do you think I didn’t try? Do you think I would have left him if he’d wanted to come?”
“All I know is you got out, and he didn’t,” Remus snarled, leaning over Regulus intimidatingly.
“Something's wrong with him,” Regulus said calmly. “We’re going to try again, but not until we’ve figured out why he was acting the way he was,” Regulus turned his gaze to Effie and Monty. “Do you have a Pensieve?”
“We do, but it’s in the vault. We can go get it in the morning,” Monty told them.
“Please do, then we can all watch my memory of what happened,” he addressed the others as well. He hoped that by reviewing his memory, he might be able to figure out what was going on or at least spot a clue. He wasn’t giving up. Sirius would come back to them, it just wouldn’t be tonight.
Remus’s shoulders slumped, and his eyes shimmered with tears.
“I just want him back,” he said, his voice thick with emotion.
“We’ll get him back. I refuse to give up,” Remus nodded, believing Regulus’s words.
“Sorry,” Remus apologised to the room. “I put everyone in danger. You were right to stop me,” Effie moved and wrapped her arms around him, holding Remus close.
“I nearly did the same thing, darling. Why don’t you go lie down for a bit, and I’ll bring you some hot chocolate and cake?” Remus nodded and, with his head hanging low, headed for the stairs.
Regulus felt James’s hand gently push him forward at the small of his back.
“Go with him, you’re the best at calming him down.”
“Midnight is,” Regulus said automatically.
“No, love, it’s you. You and Remus have the same connection I have with Sirius. You’re what he needs right now."
“Ha, Reg is totally gonna shag Lupin!” Barty snorted, right before he was forcefully manhandled to the floor, and cushions were piled high on him, covering his mouth, and when he tried to pull them off, Dorcas sat on him. Regulus rolled his eyes and followed Remus upstairs, where Effie had already made good on her promise, but Regulus was surprised she’d brought a cup and a plate for him too.
