Today is International Overdose Awareness Day and I wasn’t able to make it to my local memorial vigil this year but I’ve been thinking about it all week. Not a day goes by it doesn’t cross my mind, but especially this week. Addiction has stolen so much from our lives, our communities, our world
It’s an agony and a horror to witness, let alone experience, and I wouldn’t wish it on anyone—not even the people who bask in their cruelty and their ignorance and perpetuate the stigma that literally kills. But maybe then they’d understand. Idk. I don’t feel very magnanimous towards them right now
Overdose deaths are extremely preventable. Getting naloxone (Narcan) and the proper training on how to identify overdoses and use it is quite accessible (for now) and often free. You just have no idea until you’re there. It takes seconds to save a life. There is so much more that goes into harm reduction and recovery, a journey of years and lifetimes—but that all depends on those seconds. I typed something out but nvm I won’t even waste my breath on the people who argue against naloxone. It’s a miracle and it’s medicine. “The only qualification to enter long-term recovery is to be alive.”
What we wouldn’t give to have been there for our loved ones in those moments, or for someone else with the right preparedness. Just a few seconds for one more chance. You can’t imagine the grief and guilt and torment thinking about those moments
I miss Phil, I miss my uncle, I miss the friends I’ve lost, I miss the loved ones of the friends I’ve made through this community. We’ve all been robbed of more than we can ever fully realize. But we can and will take action and do our part to prevent anyone else from joining this club
