The New York City Gay Men’s Chorus makes history as the first openly gay musical group to perform at Carnegie Hall, presenting their Christmas concert on one of the most prestigious stages in the world.
At a time when LGBTQ+ visibility in mainstream arts was still limited—and the AIDS crisis was beginning to cast a long shadow—the chorus stepped into the spotlight with pride, talent, and unapologetic joy. Their presence at Carnegie Hall was more than a musical achievement: it was an act of cultural courage and public affirmation.
Founded only a year earlier, the NYC Gay Men’s Chorus quickly became a symbol of queer community, artistic excellence, and resilience. Their historic concert helped open doors for LGBTQ+ performers nationwide and proved that queer voices not only belonged on the world’s greatest stages—they could bring them to life.

Yesterday my coworkers and I had the honor of watching our friend/colleague Helio, with hundreds of others preform collectively as the NYC Gay Men's Chorus. The Coro Gay Cuidad de Mexico were special guests, and collectively sang a tale of both how New York is a grand catalyst of experience -- from love, to loss, and everything in between and how as a collective community, we can and shall overcome any barriers set upon us as one of the most electrifying and diverse cities in the world. Congrats to the Chorus for such an amazing job, and to our colleague Helio for his amazing solo.
