A Treatise on the Crime of Onan (eBook), M. Tissot

Originally published in the eighteenth century, A Treatise on the Crime of Onan by Swiss physician Samuel-Auguste Tissot is one of the most famous and controversial medical works of its era. First appearing in the 1760s, the book reflects the beliefs of Enlightenment-era medicine regarding the supposed physical and psychological dangers of masturbation and excessive sexual activity.

Tissot’s treatise compiles medical observations, case studies, and quotations from classical authorities such as Hippocrates, Galen, and other physicians to argue that the loss of “seminal fluid” could lead to a wide range of illnesses, including weakness, nervous disorders, blindness, and even death. The author presents numerous anecdotal cases and medical theories in an attempt to demonstrate the severe consequences he believed resulted from what he called “self-pollution.”

Although modern science has long rejected these claims, the book remains historically important. A Correct Account of the Horrible Occurrence

A Correct Account of the Horrible Occurrence is a sensational 1822 scandal pamphlet exposing the arrest of Percy Jocelyn, the Bishop of Clogher, after he was discovered late at night in the back room of a London public house with a common soldier. The text—reprinted here exactly as originally printed—details how the incident took place at the White Lion in St. James’s, and how the bishop was apprehended, publicly humiliated, and dragged through the streets under the hostile eyes of an outraged crowd.

What follows is a furious attack on hypocrisy, censorship, and the so-called “respectable” press that attempted to suppress the bishop’s identity while zealously condemning similar acts among the poor. The pamphlet not only names the bishop outright, but argues that the scandal reveals a corrupt moral double standard—the privileged protected, the powerless punished.

More than mere prurient gossip, this document is part of early queer history, recording both an open same-sex scandal and the public debate about morality, power, and who is allowed to escape judgment. Jacques de Molay, the last Grand Master of the Knights Templar, was executed in Paris after years of imprisonment and forced confessions.

The Knights Templar had been arrested in 1307 under orders from the French crown and charged with heresy, idolatry, and sexual misconduct, including accusations of same-sex acts. Historians widely view the charges as politically motivated, intended to dismantle the powerful order and seize its wealth.

East Lansing, Michigan, became the first city in the United States to enact a gay rights ordinance.

By a 4–1 vote, the city council approved a policy stating that municipal hiring must be based on qualifications alone, without regard to race, color, creed, national origin, sex, or homosexuality. At a time when few legal protections existed, the measure marked a groundbreaking step toward equality.
