hi! have you ever rated petpet colors? would love to hear your thoughts on the picnic one :D
Picnic is definitely a strange colour. First, it's petpet exclusive instead of having a matching Neopet counterpart (not that I think something like that needs to exist, but still). Secondly, it's a somewhat niche concept, mostly being foods but specifically picnic-friendly foods (with one exception—see below). Thirdly, only eight petpets are available in it. And finally, it's a Lab Ray exclusive—which makes it near-impossible to obtain, given the thousands of petpet colour and species combos out there. By extension, some of them also have unique names, and none of them can be painted. All and all, it's weird, but it does work well as a gimmick colour and can be very fun when done right.
The only exception to the picnic food rule is the "Rainy Day Ruining Your Picnic Cirrus", which is entirely too long of a name. On the one hand, this gives the colour a bit more variety, and the grumpy stormcloud Cirrus design looks great. But on the other hand, it does feel like a stretch to connect this to picnics when it could just be a grey Cirrus or even it's own separate Lab Ray colour.
Favorite Species:
Hoagie Kadoatie: First off, it's called the Hoagie Kadoatie, and that's amazing. And secondly, it's a funny silly design. It doesn't make any sense (how does it move?), but the charm outweighs any logical loopholes. My only real issue is that the head spots are incredibly low-contrast and should have been either darker or lighter.
Deviled Egg Goldy: I don't have any strong opinions on Goldys normally, but this one is adorable. I love the expression, and making the Goldy into the yolk part of of a deviled egg is clever and very cute. The overall art quality on this one is also nice.
Potato Rock: Rock petpets rarely disappoint, and this one doesn't either. The concept works with it perfectly and its weirdly well shaded and detailed for what's basically a silly gag petpet.
Least Favorite Species:
Picnic Symol: I can't. Figure out what this is supposed to even be?? Like, it has a generic name that isn't helping, and it looks more like a woodland petpet than anything picnic related. I don't know, maybe this is just a me issue, but I feel like the concept should be clearer regardless. On the plus side, it's at least very nice looking from a technical art perspective.
