I’m turning 26 in two days. It feels unreal, to be an adult, to be happy, to feel so free, to have these #privileges, to simply exist. 26 years of living, learning, growing, sinking, fighting back, unlearning. 26 years of being. Birthdays always make me a little existential and retrospective. • There was a time when I wished I was born a boy. It wasn’t gender dysphoria, but a reaction to the world I was growing up in. I often imagined what I would do with the freedom. What would my mind come up with if it wasn’t continually worried about being groped in public? Where would it wander to if it didn’t need to to be hypervigilant in bookshops, taking in the blurbs but also being aware of the men who walked a bit too closely behind me as I moved from the children’s shelf to the young adult’s? • I imagine a childhood in which I wasn’t expected to take responsibility for other’s perverseness. In which my religion wasn’t being misinterpreted to suck all happiness out of me, I wasn’t imbibing the message that being good would keep me safe and my gender didn’t determine my fate. • Fate is such a strange word, there is too much permanency about it. No one told me fates could be changed, broken and remade, that the cracks could be filled with gold and a heart would come to love it again. I had to learn it by myself. And I'll always be grateful for the lessons, because the easy things in life just never feel as good.
