Plant of the Day
Friday 16 July 2021
Naturalising easily on areas of disturbed soil the biennial, Hesperis matronalis (dame's violet, damask violet, garden rocket, night violet, sweet rocket) was on a mound near an abandoned croft on Westray, Orkney. The plant grows as a biennial, or short-lived perennial with a rosette which produces leafy stems with clusters of white, or pale to mid-purple, scented flowers.
