The river carried vivid red and yellow leaves in its leisurely path, the last remnants of autumn as the air spoke rumors of winter. It was cool against Yuki's skin, brushing his hair from his face, as he held his arms around himself and absently rubbed his shoulder. He hadn't been prepared for the cold, but it was an old friend. Something crisp and real, something that could touch his skin and soothe the ache he often found there. These days, with Ravid and Shian, he didn't feel the pain as much. Tonight, hardly at all.
The bridge was mostly abandoned as they stood at its railing, the soft rush of water calming Yuki's nerves. The moonlight touched the waves now, and at the riverbank he heard the ghosts of laughter, his own name spoken, playful and innocent. A smile lifted Yuki's lips unconsciously. It felt good to see the moon here, its crescent shape reflected in the water. Here, where he was free.
Ravid's voice brought Yuki's eyes up to him, their soft glow taking on the pale moonlight. The words surprised him and a light blush crept into his cheeks. He hadn't known he was being watched. But Ravid looked at him so softly, with a smile at the edges of his mouth, his aura enveloping Yuki with warmth that combated the chill of the air. Yuki smiled wider, softer, as he tilted his head.
"I didn't even know I was."
He looked at Ravid like he too held the beauty of the river, his eyes tracing over features he knew so well, now illuminated in white. He'd know Ravid anywhere, his voice even in a sea of people. He'd memorized every curve of his face and found solace in those striking blue eyes. When was the last time he could remember that, smiling without realizing it? Here, when he was safe?
