Yuki wasn't the most popular kid by any means, nor the least. He existed in High School Limbo, where most people simply left him alone. Sure, he had a few friends, if you could call them that, but all the superficial high school bullshit never really appealed to him. He had real problems, and constantly feeling the pain and heartache over nothing made him want to keep to himself.
Besides, everyone got weird when tragedy was involved.
There was another guy, Sol Lee, who was rumored to have suffered a similar tragedy to Yuki. Isn't it so sad, people said. I can't even imagine. But for other people, once a few weeks had passed, they were over it. For those of them who dealt with it daily, it was never over.
Yuki was busy trying to block out Jessica Hartwood's soul-crushing angst of breaking up with her boyfriend when he ran into someone, scattering their books and backpack on the floor.
"Shit," he said. When he glanced up, he recognized the other boy. Sol Lee. Yuki knelt down to start picking up the books and pens that had dropped out of his bag. "I'm really sorry."
