Plant of the Day

In this meadow it was easy to overlook the green flowered Neottia ovata (common twayblade, eggleaf twayblade). This native orchid to the UK is seen in the woodlands, scrub and grasslands on chalky soils. Pollination is carried out by a variety of small insects including sawflies, beetles and parasitic wasps.

Two twayblades! You really need to have those Legolas elf-eyes to spot these flowers. They’re orchids in the genus Neottia, and they’re tiny - I’d guess they’re usually around 10 centimeters tall at most. The species at top is Neottia cordata, heartleaf twayblade, and the one on bottom is Neottia banksiana, northwestern twayblade. These species used to be in the genus Listera, but that genus was moved into Neottia. Neottia cordata is circumpolar, and while I found it in Washington State, it can also be found Europe, Asia, and Greenland! The common name “twayblade” refers to the sharp, blade-like fork in the orchid’s lip.
