Hey, I always love to talk about gender neutral language, thanks for the question!!

Here’s a video (in German) that @podcastbuchstabensuppe did on this topic, and beginning from 8:00 on, it’s about various options for neutral pronouns and how to use them.

A quick summary:

There’s ‘x’ which you use instead of the name or pronoun, like “This is Ahmed. X likes flowers”.

There’s ‘xier’, which is one of the most commonly known German neopronouns. Anna heger has made an excellent comic about this zine, where it comes from and how to use it. (I personally think it’s rather complicated because like with most German language, you have to decline it in every case.)

There’s also “es” like the English “it”, but it’s only okay to use this for people who have explicitly given you the permission - otherwise it can seem degrading and dehumanizing.

There’s more:

some have started using “they/them” in a German-ified version which is “dey/dem/denen”. It seems to work well, especially because it’s pretty close to the German language already, and it’s easier for bilingual people who already use they/them in English.

some use “per/pers” (short for “person”). This seems very easy as you barely have to decline it.

some use no pronouns at all, just their name all the way through. There’s also always plenty of ways to avoid pronouns altogether by changing a sentence. So instead of “Das ist sein/ihr Stift” you can always say “der eigene Stift” or “der Stift gehört ____”

Da das Thema zurzeit in den Medien und in der Politik hochkocht ... manche Leute regen sich über Gendersternchen in meinen Büchern auf, deshalb hier als friendly reminder:

Ja, in einigen meiner jüngeren Bücher gibt es genderneutrale Sprache. In manchen verwende ich auch (sparsam) das Gendersternchen, z.B. in der Buchreihe "Hexen in Hamburg" in der Formulierung: "Stammtisch für Hexen und Heid*innen".

In "Ein göttliches Paar" und "Regency Park" benutze ich außerdem Neopronomen bei nichtbinären Hauptfiguren. Das wurde mir teilweise schon als Rechtschreibfehler angekreidet. Es handelt sich jedoch nicht um solche Fehler.

Das betrifft übrigens "nur" meine Selfpublishing-Titel. In meinen viktorianischen Krimis mit Mrs und Mr Fox, die im Dryas Verlag erschienen sind, verwende ich das generische Maskulinum.

Wer weder Gendersternchen, noch Neopronomen oder genderneutrale Sprache lesen möchte, kaufe bitte meine jüngeren (Selfpublishing-)Bücher nicht.
