Pairs Well With…Dave Matthews Band, Of Monsters and Men, Ladysmith Black Mambazo

Rhythmic pop rock at its core, Native Young’s music has elements of familiarity, but the way they go about their sound is fascinatingly unique.  Their ingredients include native South African traditions, especially within percussive embellishments, but that nucleus extends to acoustic rock orbits and electro-pop atmospheres together.  The innovative band’s debut record Kings feels like a conversation, aided by several spoken interludes, but that vibe also comes across in their music, interacting instruments as a loose, in-the-round projection.  The lead vocalist’s voice is also crazy interesting to Western ears, like a pitched tone that’s coherent to Native Young’s music.  Their range really opens up by record’s end, embracing traditions in a collective jam (“Thandiwe”, “Boffolo”), a cool swing that pairs well with the sax/penny whistle accompaniment, a big part of Native Young’s spiritual, effervescent sound.

With members stretching from Khayelitsha to Spain, Native Young is an indie 4 piece collective that hosts a menagerie of musical talent and eclectic taste. “This project is about returning to the grass roots of pop, it’s about the melodic core, raw African rhythm and simple storytelling” explains Yannick. “It’s this simplicity that has provided us with a vehicle for deeper cultural exploration both musically and spiritually”.
