I finished this little art project last night. It's a jacket with all the nasty things people have said to me during school from K-12 to college. And keep in mind, this is just what I remember. And keep in mind, these are just unique instances - no count of how often the same or similar things were repeated to me.
They say that neurodivergent children receive thousands more negative comments during childhood than their neurotypical counterparts.
I think the spiciest one is my third grade teacher who implied that the best thing that could be done with me would be to take me out to a field and shoot me in the head. :)
And if you decide to zoom in and read, keep in mind: I had a 4.7 GPA in high school with my weighted classes. I graduated with a 4.0 in one of my scientific concentrations in college and a 3.7 in the second - one that is usually pursued alone with no second concentration btw. Yet I still managed to rack up the comments on how I was lazy, undedicated, unprofessional, not good enough, and that I didn't belong in the program or at the school.
If you speak this way to students of any age, may you grow and improve as a person. If you cannot, I hope no one ever forgives you.
