Anyways why the fuck did Naruto invent a secret underground army of brainwashed child soldiers and then just never do anything with that again. Can we talk about that
there are certain diff interpretations for the things i like that i can appreciate & i understand not paying much attention to canon but like... when people write ‘all Root shinobi are complete blank slates with no personality and they can’t think for themselves’ i’m like.... wherest?? did you read this?? torune quits fighting an enemy to save fu’s life during a fight. also is like ‘omg bb don’t worry your traps are amazing’ when fu wonders aloud if a trap he set would work. fu gets so pissed when his ploy re: destroying the byakugan doesn’t work that he calls the mizukage a bitch and then shintenshen no fucks off so she punches her retainer in the eye
sai, you say. listen: first of all sai is a depressed bitch which would account for his ‘i don’t feel anything’ thing, so jot that down. secondly most of his interactions w team 7 early on consist of them telling him what they assume and him going :I and :) alternatively. after they’ve been really annoying for a while is when he busts out his ‘i don’t have emotions so u can’t hurt me’ which lets face it is the ninja version of ‘i’m rubber you’re glue’ and is not borne out by anything else he does, ever, or any other Root members we see
edit: i just found this in my drafts and i do not remember writing it but it made me cry laughing and I just ran into another fic depicting all root agents as mannequins with knives earlier so here have it
Which Anbu kitten would little Naruto adopt first?
Yugao Uzuki (mid-left)
Hinoto (bottom right)
Kagura (top left)
Gazeru (bottom left)
Komachi (top right)
Unnamed Root Cat (mid-right)
If Soifon was in Naruto, which of these would she be the most efficient Commander of?
Anbu Black Ops - Special Assassination and Tactical Squad
Hunter-nin Corps
Root

I think what makes writing Sai so interesting (and especially his interactions with other characters) is not knowing what things he does are his and what's something he's been taught to do (and in the end, if it's something he chooses, does it matter?).
In being a blank slate, everything he does is both deliberate and learned. And yet, is it simply something he's learned in order to appeal to the others? Is it genuine? Does it matter? What is his own personality and what is simply copied, and what traits has he simply pasted over himself? Does it matter, if he's chosen them as his?
This is certainly not unique to Sai but it annoys me how much of his presence in Naruto is just "haha isn't it so funny that this guy sticks out and doesn't understand human interaction?" like no... not considering his backstory. It's difficult to view it that way seeing the entirety of ROOT and its impacts. It's not exactly peak comedy.
I feel like his relegation (among others) to being a background 'funny' character is indicative of a larger issue within Naruto of Kishimoto being unwilling to actually go in-depth and address the serious implications of the worldbuilding he's thrown together.
It means it's not only unsatisfying narratively to see these characters shoe-horned into comedic relief but also really very uncomfortable considering their origins. It honestly feels like it works against the effort to make a compelling story sometimes lol
I'm so obsessed with Sakura and Sai as a concept because you know Sakura is the most affectionate person. She tells her friends she loves them nonstop and holds their hands and jumps on their back without warning and likes to cuddle and picks them up all the time. And Sai loves her even if he doesn't really know that means or how to go about it so he just lets her do whatever she wants. If she wants a piggyback? Sure he doesn't get it but he'll carry her. If she wants to hold his hand she can do that. The first time he takes her hand without prompting she almost cries.
But it kinda messes him up because he just kinda assumes that's what he should do and then he Also becomes the type to tell people he just met he loves them.
Basically? Sai is just a limp little beanstalk and lets Sakura hang off him like a koala or pick him up even if it looks ridiculous because he's like a foot taller than her and their dynamic is so dear to me
