Some people spend on their families without knowing that they are getting closeness to Allah through it, وبعض الناس ينفق على أهله ما ينفق ولكنه لا يشعر بأنه يتقرب إلى الله بهذا الإنفاق if a needy person come to them, they give him a riyāl (ie: some money) thinking it is leading them closer to Allah. ولو جاءه مسكين وأعطاه ريالا واحدا يشعر بأنه متقرب إلى الله بهذه الصدقة However the wājib ṣadaqah which is spent on family is more rewarding and virtuous (than voluntary ṣadaqah). ولكن الصدقة الواجبة على الأهل أفضل وأكثر أجرا Muḥammad b. ʿĀʿishah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: Hind b. ʿUtbah the wife of Abū Sufyān (may Allah be pleased with them both) visited the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. عن عائشة رضي الله عنها قالت: "دخلت هند بنت عتبة - امرأة أبي سفيان - على رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم She said: “O Messenger of Allah ﷺ indeed Abū Sufyān is a stingy man. فقالت: يا رسول الله، إنَّ أبا سفيان رجلٌ شحيحٌ He does not give me the provisions which suffices me and my child except for that which I take from his wealth without his knowledge. لا يعطيني من النَّفقة ما يكفيني ويكفي بنيَّ، إلا ما أخذت من ماله بغير علمه، Is there any sin upon me in this?” فهل عليَّ في ذلك من جناحٍ؟ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied: “Take that which is reasonable from his wealth what suffices you and your child.” فقال: خذي من ماله بالمعروف ما يكفيك ويكفي بنيك". The Quran describes the righteous as having a list of traits which sound really straight forward, but if you were to try to consistently behave in that way, you would realize it takes a tremendous amount of self control. One of these characteristics is to give to charity in good times and in bad. It's easy to be generous when we've got plenty, but when things are tight and we're short, giving becomes more of a challenge. But remember that giving charity never decreases our money. Never. We will always get multiplied reward for our investment. This is what Allah swt promised us. So what are you waiting for? Will you believe Him? Will you give?
