Ever wondered what a Japanese nuclear power plant sounds like?
BIOSPHERE // GENKAI-1 [N-PLANTS, 2011]
YUSUKE MURAKAMI
Biosphere’s work since Substrata has taken different aural forms that all fit within the idiom of Geir Jenssen’s project. However, while it is always heard as Biosphere, it is not monolithic in its shape. We already know that from Shenzhou, which sampled Debussy to achieve another way to reach a transcendence in the form of music and managed not to sound dull whilst doing it. The same can be said for N-Plants which has a site-specific concept – it deals with the Japanese post-war economic boom and all that it consists of. There is a sense of wonder, present in it, although it is not using the typical signifiers of it, it is much more minimal. Yes, that does feel like it is in Biosphere’s wheelhouse, this is a frost in the form of chill out.
