Gold Stater for Alexander III as Herakles, After 336 BC mint Mysia, Pergamum (Pergamon), Pergamon lies on the north edge of the Caicus plain in the historic region of Mysia , This historically highly significant coin was a piece presumably of Herakles, illegitimate son of Alexander, who grew up in Pergamon. It is very likely that he commissioned the emission before his assassination in 309. Obverse: Alexander III as Herakles, wearing lion skin, facing right. Reverse: Archaistic Palladion standing figure with chlamys over shoulder, spear in raised right hand, shield w/ star in left hand. Crested Corinthian helmet in lower left field. Struck in extremely high relief, a few microscopic handling marks are confined mostly to the reverse field which are a very minor issue when one considers the extreme rarity of this outstanding specimen.
The Kingdom of #Pergamum, located in modern-day #Turkey, was a key player in the ancient Mediterranean. Founded in the mid-third century BCE, its capital, Pergamon (now Bergama), became a notable late-Hellenistic city. Built on a steep site, it featured innovative urban design and grand architecture, supported by royal patrons. The city had two main sections: the steep upper town, known for its dramatic ruins, and the lower town, where significant remains like the Asklepieion, Red Hall, and Roman structures still exist. The upper town remains the most striking, showcasing Pergamum’s rich architectural and cultural legacy.

~ Stater of Lampsakos with head of Aphrodite (?).
Culture: Greek
Period:Â Classical Period
Date: 387–330 B.C.
Mint: Lampsakos, Mysia
Medium: Gold
Extremely Rare Hekte with Helios & Horses, C. 410 BC
An electrum hekte from Kyzikos, Mysia with a naked Helios kneeling while holding two horses by their bridles; a tunny fish, the civic badge of Kyzikos, is below them while the reverse side is a quadripartite incuse square. Extremely fine and extremely rare, almost certainly the finest known. Â
The engravers of the Kyzicene coinage drew their ideas from numerous sources, both local and foreign.  Here, the inter-connected mythological relationships of Helios to Apollo; and Apollo as father to the city-founder Kyzikos point to an indigenous origin. The symmetrically balanced composition of the sun-god Helios flanked by the horses’ foreparts must have been sculptural in inspiration and it has been suggested that since the composition on the obverse is perfectly square that it was copied from a metope of a temple. Although full staters bearing this composition exist in some numbers, the hektes are exceedingly rare.
