I constantly wonder how authors deal with cancel culture. It must be difficult to create problematic characters or make your characters have some problematic behavior to execute the plot, which is usually what keeps the story going, when it seems like people don’t understand that is the point. The point is that their toxic behavior usually is a key point for the story to keep going and probably for it to reach a conclusion. Once that toxic problematic behavior comes people just “cancel” the character and that’s it, they are done, the human factor just doesn’t exist. Or worst, they wonder if what the character did is a reflection of what the author believes. I always wanted to write a story one day but the more I see posts like this online, the more I tend to give up on this dream. It’s like you can’t win with cancel culture, even if it’s a fictional situation.
