Large gunpowder magazine (arsenal) | Museum Night, 2017 The large gunpowder magazine is an impressive structure, entirely cut in the rock bellow the upper town. The project was designed by Major Franz Nicholas Suly, one of the leading engineers engaged in the first phase of the baroque reconstruction of the (Kalemegdan) fortress. The arsenal was built in two years (1718-1720), and it also served for ammunition storage throughout the 19th century. Later on, in accordance with the 1739 peace treaty, the arsenal was handed over to the Ottomans undamaged. Today, this area has been only partly renovated and arranged. One of the halls features a permanent display of Roman stone monuments (stelae, sarcophagi and altars) collected over the past decades from Singidunum (Belgrade), Viminacium (Kostolac) and The Kosmaj Mountain. In the summertime, the arsenal with its enclosed courtyard occasionally hosts concerts and theatre performances.
