My head's still spinning when Rhys rolls by me on his way to breakfast. He and I are almost always the first two to arrive at the dining hall. He confided in me once that it was so he could get his food without most of the school watching him try to manage his wheelchair and tray at the same time. I donât see why he worries about it; he seems extremely deft at managing both. Certainly better than I would be. But maybe heâs had some rough experiences with it in the past.
âGood morning, Simon,â he says, looking over at me, his grin unusually wide.
âAhâŚyeah, good morning, Rhys,â I say, trying to appear normal. I guess I fail because he looks even more amused.
âGoing for an early morning swim, are you?â he asks in a voice thatâs tight, like heâs trying to hold in laughter.
My story involves enigmatic beings that travel to different universes and realities as per a law that doesnât allow them to stay in one place for too long. As a world building blog, do you recommend that I keep going with the idea, or is creating various seperate worlds too much for a story to be practical? Other suggestions?
Feral: Asking a group of people who spend so much time worldbuilding for pleasure and profit that we have a troubleshooting blog about it whether to keep building new worlds might get you a slightly biased response. As it is, this question is ultimately a plot question. Itâs practical if your story can handle it, and we cannot comment on that. Honestly, if youâre just nervous about trying to create multiple, distinct worlds, remember that the only way youâll ever manage to do it is if you try to do it first.
James Tiberius Kirk had seen some weird stuff during his time as Captain of the USS Enterprise, but this one took the cake. There, on his ship, were two almost exact replicas of himself!
Ten minutes ago, they had detected an ion storm and the transporters were declared off limits until the storm passed. No one wanted to meet up with their sinister counterparts from the mirror universe ever again. Kirk shuddered at the remembrance of an evil bearded Spock holding a knife to his throat.
Then suddenly two life forms appeared in the transporter room. âWhat are they, Scotty?â Kirk had barked.
âHumans, Captain.â Scotty replied, sounding shellshocked, âspecifically, Jim Kirk humans.â
Spockâs eyebrows shot up. âIt appears this ion storm has affected multiple universes, Captain. Fascinating.â
âDonât let them out of that room Scotty, Iâll be there in a second. Kirk Out. Mr. Spock, you have the conn. Iâm going to see whatâs up with my other selves.â
Kirk practically ran to the transporter room, then peeked around the door, cautiously checking his phaser. It didnât sound like Scotty was threatened, but one could never be sure. But when his eyes focused on the newcomers, caution went out the window. âWhat theâŚâŚâ was the only thing he could say.
There, chatting easily with Scotty and eying each other with amusement, stood two Jim Kirk doppelgängers. They looked exactly like himself, except neither wore command gold. The Kirk on the left wore science blue and thick glasses. He apparently was expounding on the scientific marvels that had just occurred, while the Kirk on the left sported a red shirt and a short beard, grease stained fingers signaling he spent a lot of time in engineering.
They both started when Jim walked in. âGentlemen, may I ask how you ended up on my ship?â He felt so strange talking to himself. These guys were him, and yet not him.
Red shirt Kirk answered easily, âIon storm came up suddenly on the way to back to my ship. That must have been one powerful disturbance to bring two of us to yet another Enterprise.â He smirked âI never saw myself as captain material before now.â
âMe neither,â spoke up the third Kirk, âI look so much better in blue.â
He cleared his throat rather nervously. âYouâre not the evil version of me, are you? I had a nasty encounter with my mirror counterpoint once.â
Bearded Kirk chuckled, âI donât think so, although my wife swears I am frequently.â
âWife?!!!â exclaimed the other two Jims simultaneously.
âSure,â Red Shirt replied, âCaptain Nyota Uhura. Amazing woman. She can speak a bunch of alien dialects and is extremely gifted in negotiating. Fantastic leader. Sheâs also gorgeous, but I bet you already know that.â
âWell, yeah,â admitted Captain Jim, when he had recovered from the shock, âbut she shut me down really fast when I tried anything. She and Commander Spock are an item and no one with any sense of self-preservation tries to mess with a Vulcanâs bond mate.â
First Officer Kirk spoke up. âThatâs a universal truth, I think. I got hit on by some horny Orions awhile back, and he came up and gave them the Vulcan death glare and strongly suggested that they stay away from me, if they valued their health. Itâs kind of hot actually.â He smiled rather fondly as the other Kirks gaped.
âWell, if youâre into that sort of thing,â shrugged Captain Kirk. âIâm more into a hot southern Doctor myself.â
âEven though he lives to stab us with hyposprays?â Science Kirk looked uneasy at the mere thought of the dreaded device.
âItâs totally worth it. Trust me.â Regular Kirk looked smug.
âI donât doubt it,"red shirt Jim replied easily,â judging from the way Carol raves about his hands. But Iâve never swung that way.â More shocked gaping resulted.
At this interesting moment, Scotty broke in. "Captain, you may want to take yourâŚumâŚ.other selves somewhere you can sit down. This may take a while.â
âOkay, Scotty,â The captain said with a cunning grin,âIâll take them to see Bones. Itâll drive him insane. Three versions of me!â
When Leonard McCoy saw the unexpected guests Jim had told him about over the comm, he wasnât sure if he hadnât died and gone to heavenâor hell. Much as he loved Jim, one James T. Kirk in a universe was plenty for him to deal with.
âHey Bones!â,chorused the three Jims in unison, clearly on purpose. Seeing three pairs of devilish blue eyes staring at him, Leonard felt faint, and sat down quickly.
âI think we overwhelmed himâ the Jim wearing a blue shirt said, looking worried. The captain ran over and laid a hand on his shoulder.
âYou okay, Bones? You looked pretty flabbergasted at the sight of three Jims. Iâm a force of nature, arenât I?â
âYes, Iâm fineâ, Bones grumped, âand so is your ego. How in the world did you two get here?â He asked, staring hard at the other Kirks.
âSevere ion storm."answered Commander Kirk. "I was attempting to take readings for the report to Captain Spock whenââ
âCaptain Spock?â interrupted the astonished Doctor. âMust be a very logical universe youâre from.â
âIt isâ, agreed Science Kirk, âbut youâre there to keep us from forgetting weâre human. You chew me out every time I stay up too late working on experiments or blow myself up in the lab.â
âGood thingâ Leonard muttered, then turned to engineer Kirk.
âWhat about you? If youâre a Kirk, I bet you have the same predisposition for bodily injury, especially working in engineering.â
âRight onâ, said red shirt Jim cheerily. âIt drives you and Nyota crazy.â
âWhy would Uhura care?â asked Leonard bluntly,â Sheâs not known for being very fond of you.â
The Captain choked back a snort. Talk about understatements.
âIn my universe, she liked me enough to marry me. We made friends in the academy and ended up falling for each other. We tied the knot two years ago.â Kirk got a far away look as he said this, remembering how gorgeous Nyota looked in that white gown. âSheâs probably tearing the universe apart trying to find me.â
âWell, I find it hard to comprehend, but more power to ya.â
Bones shrugged, almost wishing he could see how this Jim and Uhura looked like as a married couple. The fights were probably rough, but likely the makeup was fantastic. No, he was NOT going to imagine that.
âWhat about you, Commander? Anybody tearing space apart for you?â,He inquired of the highly intellectual looking science officer Jim.
âSpock. I can feel his anxiety through our bond. Iâm trying to reassure him, but I donât know if itâs getting through.â The bespectacled Jim looked troubled, rubbing the back of his head nervously and knocking his glasses askew.
âBonded to Spock, huh?â asked Leonard, running a tricorder over the guest Kirks (theyâd just had their molecules scrambled, after all).
Jim grinned a little shyly. âYes, three years now. Heâs trying to teach me some Vulcan, but itâs slow going. The pet names are great though.â
He smiled to himself, thinking of Spock calling him T'hy'la or Ashayam in an almost tender tone.
The Doctor was skeptical and indicated so. âI find it hard to imagine the hobgoblin calling anyone pet names, especially you, Jim.â
He poked his captain playfully, resulting in the classic Kirk pouty face.
âAw, come on Bones, look how lovable I am!â He pointed at his blue clad alternate self. âBesides, youâve got your own pet names for me.â
He winked, leering shamelessly, causing his boyfriend to flush.
âDammit, Jim! They donât need to know that!â
âYeah, We really donât,â chimed in engineer Kirk, looking somewhat queasy at the thought of his very platonic best friend calling him âDarlinâ or 'sugarâ as McCoy did with Carol in their universe.
In the slightly awkward silence, Captain Kirkâs comm went off. Science Kirk perked up at the sound of Spockâs voice over the device.
âCaptain, have you discerned the intentions and identities of the life forms?â
âYes, Commander Spock. They are humans and non-hostile. Bones is checking them for injuries and Scotty is working on getting them home.â
âTheir identities, Captain?â
âUm⌠theyâre me from other universes.â A long silence followed and Spock said rather shortly âI will proceed to Medbay. Spock out.â
Captain Kirk grinned. âI think we broke his brainâ he said, with great hilarity, wondering what was going on between those pointy ears at the information heâd received.
When Spock strode into Dr. McCoyâs office minutes later, he stopped very abruptly and stared.
âHey Spock!"greeted two Jims cheerily, (science Jim, however, looked sad and wistful).
"This is most remarkable, Captain,â the first officer replied, âI did not think such a thing was likely to happen again.â
âWell, it did, Spock. Meet Commander Jim Kirk and Lieutenant Commander Jim Kirk. Bones says theyâre physically fine, just displaced.â
Spock then proceeded to question the two other Kirks which led to all three comparing life stories. All of the major events were the same, but the different roles and reactions led to very different paths.
Engineer Kirk had been orphaned at 10 when Winona died suddenly. He was then sent to live with an aunt and uncle on an ill fated colony, Tarsus IV. Upon his return to earth at 15, emaciated and traumatized, he was placed in a foster home after he got out of the hospital. The foster parents were very patient and caring to him and eventually broke through the walls the angry teen put up. His foster father taught him how to repair engines, developing his love of tinkering at a young age. He then went through the engineering track at Starfleet academy, befriended a fantastic command track woman, helped save earth, and ended up on the Enterprise under the new captain (who happened to be his new girlfriend) Nyota Uhura, who he married three years later.
Science officer Kirk was fascinated with the subject also early on in life. His mother had retired from Starfleet and saw that her sons received the best education they could. Jimâs papers and research impressed many at Starfleet, including a certain Vulcan Instructor. But he did not get assigned to the Enterprise when the distress call came and was on the Farragut when it was destroyed. Jim survived, and so did Vulcan, and when he woke up, there was a familiar pair of brown eyes watching him with definite emotion. When Spock was made Captain, he immediately appointed Jim First Officer.
Last of all, Jim (the captain) told his story: the lonely childhood, the harsh stepfather, the rebellious wandering and Captain Pikeâs dare. Then he recounted meeting Bones on the shuttle, the Kobayashi Maru(which tickled Engineer Kirk greatly) and the battle of Vulcan.
There was silence after they finished and then Bones commented wryly, âYou may be from different tracks, but youâre all darn good at cheating death. Send the other McCoys my sympathy when you get back.â Three Jims grinned back at him.
When Scotty called and said that he was ready to send the other Jims back home, the Captain insisted on taking a photo for posterity. âEgomaniac,â Bones muttered to himself as Beardy Kirk and Brainy Kirk stepped onto the transporter pad.
âLive long and prosper,â said Spock, holding up his hand in the Vulcan salute. âPeace and long lifeâ answered science Kirk, returning the gesture with a fond smile.
As they disappeared, The captain could be heard shouting âI am so AWESOME!â Bones face palmed, knowing Jimâs ego had just inflated to even greater proportions.
Spock simply remarked âthat was a fascinating experience, but I fail to comprehend a world where Nyota Uhura is in any way agreeable to your advances.â He left the room to Jimâs protests and Bonesâ laughter. Bless that hobgoblin, he thought.
âAre you certain you suffered no ill effects from the occurrence? Captain Spock asked his First Officer.
"None at all Spockâ, sighed Jim. His hand was held tightly in the Vulcans and Spock was practically purring in his ear as they snuggled.
âDid you meet my alternate self?â Spock inquired, rubbing Jimâs hand in a manner that would have scandalized any Vulcan, causing Kirk to close his eyes in bliss. âYep. Heâs not MY Spock, so donât worry.â
âWorry?â Scoffed Spock, sending waves of affection to his t'hy'la, âwhy would I. Most Illogical.â Jim smiled and held out his fingertips for a kiss.
@Oh, Jim, you do have a crazy way of attracting weird happenings", sighed Captain Uhura, as she held her husband tightly, relieved to find him safe and in one piece.
âYes I do,â Jim replied softly, content to gaze into her big brown eyes and grateful to be home. âI basically saw what my life could have been, if things had gone differently.â
âDid it make you want those lives?â she asked, looking him in the eye.
âNoâ He responded, kissing her breathless, âno I didnât want those other Jimâs lives, because they donât have you.â And he began intently kissing up her neck which led to other things and Nyota forgot about everything else for quite awhile after that.
âOw!â squealed Jim, rubbing his neck which had just been ruthlessly hypoâd. âWhat was that for, Bones?â
âFor your incessant narcissism todayâ grumped the doctor. âIt was making me sick.â Jim threw himself on his bed, stretching his long limbs playfully.
âAww, come on, Bones,â he wheedled. âDidnât you think it was interesting to hear how my other lives went?â
âYes, but I donât want you to regret the one you have.â Bones squeezed Jimâs hand protectively and a trifle possessively.
âIâve made plenty of mistakes in my life, but you are definitely not one of them, Bonesâ. Jim was staring at him now earnestly, blue eyes honest. âDo you believe me?â
Seeing the truth in his face, Bones answered by leaning down and kissing the captain soundly. He had just the Jim he wanted.

Sometimes when things donât get the way I want them to be or if I am in the middle of a really hard time, I just close my eyes and think of you. Maybe in that universe, I am not this miserable. I hope you own the life I am longing for in this universe. I hope my struggles are just your nightmares when you finally lay on your soft panda bed as you fall deep into slumber. The thought of you comforts me. Somehow, it assures me that not all things get lost. Maybe all the paths I could have chosen and those I never did, led them to you.Â
Sometimes I use this theory to justify my deja vus, to explain why I just hate things and are afraid of some. I even thought that my dreams are glimpses of events occurring in your life. And during the times that I just feel like crying all of a sudden, deep down, I thought maybe youâre hurting too much and because youâre a part of me, even though youâre from another universe, nothing can separate us still.Â
I hope youâre living the life I want to have. I hope you have faith in yourself and in love, things I really find it hard to believe in. But most of all, I hope you are happy.Â
okay but I really like multiverse theories! And yes, it is a little annoying with the berenstain bears thing, like we all just didnât close enough
but
but I love the theory of multiple universes. I find it extremely comforting and amazing and it really kind of helps dull out reality which i need sometimes.
I do know though that it can really throw ppl off so i totally get why itâs annoying for people but I think itâs kind of fun and idk i just like multiverse.
