Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths Flavor Spotlight: Fertilid
The fertilid is a very interesting creature, only ever seen before on the plane of Lorwyn where it looked quite different. A fertilid is an elemental, which essentially is a catch-all term for any creature that is born of the natural elements of any plane. These could be creatures made of rock, lava, wind, etc. brought to life by the magical mana of the plane. Ikoria happens to have one of the largest elemental populations in the Multiverse. In fact, elementals are one of the five dominant monster clades on Ikoria and have a major presence in the triome of Ketria, though they exist everywhere on Ikoria. Let’s take a closer look at what fertilids look like on Ikoria through Nicholas Gregory’s art:
We can almost see the formation of this monster, attempting to resemble a natural born creature of the forest but not quite getting there. Fertilids are deeply connected to the mana of the plane and are powered by it completely. This shows in its mechanics as it allows the player to search for and connect to mana sources. However, in doing so, the fertilid is de-powered. Once the player has used up the mana seeking resources of the fertilid, it dies and goes back in the ground. So although it can stand as a formidable creature on its own, fertilids are often used for their connection to mana and usefulness in providing a mage or planeswalker the power they need to cast the spells that will defeat their opponent.
