It is easy to take for granted just how precarious it is to live in poverty.
It costs money to make money. Think of a single parent with no familial support looking for a job. They have to pay for child care to go on every single interview. \
A guaranteed livable income could help lift a lot of people out of poverty in Canada.

An Opportunity to Support Guaranteed Livable Basic Income in Canada!
I just got an email from the NDP about the 2021 budget consultation questionnaire, and there’s opportunities on it to support GLBI! There are other important things on the survey, like education, anti-racism, and support for small businesses, but to quote the email:
The survey will ask you about many different social and economic priorities. There are two questions that relate directly to basic income, and provide space for you to write:
6) If you were designing the federal budget, what would you like to see in it to help create jobs and grow Canada’s economy?
And
7) When we are able to safely re-open the economy and COVID-19 is under control, what is one idea you have for how the federal government can help you or your community?
When answering these questions, consider highlighting the facts around why we need basic income and how it will benefit all of us.* You may also want to tell a personal story about how GLBI would help you and your family.
Please take a few minutes to fill out the survey and share it with friends and family!

Dear Dr. Fry,
I am writing to you today to urge you to support one of the most important motions of our generation, a bill that could change Canada at a fundamental level, offering an unprecedented level of support and security for all its residents, from coast to coast.
I am urging you to support MOTION-46, which will convert 2020’s Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) into an ongoing Guaranteed Livable Basic Income. CERB has offered six million Canadian residents invaluable financial assistance during this difficult time and is testament to the ability of this nation’s government to move swiftly and effectively to support the needs of its people. However, when CERB ends, the economic vulnerabilities of so many in Canada certainly will not, and without ongoing financial support they will struggle greatly.
In fact, the pandemic has left many in Canada more vulnerable than ever and only further emphasised the economic divides present in our society. A Guaranteed Livable Basic Income is the ideal way to not only address this, but to also ensure a more stable future for so many, changing millions of lives for the better. I know that you are a strong advocate for Indigenous and women’s issues and I’m sure you can understand how MOTION-46 would provide a particularly essential level of security for so many across Canada’s Indigenous communities, for working women and for single mothers. I believe that to support MOTION-46 is to invest in the people of this country, and that it would offer the same level of support and basic dignity as universal healthcare. Indeed, its introduction would be as historic.
The past two months, we have witnessed ever-growing support for this issue all across Canada and I am delighted to see it brought to Parliament by MP Leah Gazan. It’s been encouraging to see the Liberal government work constructively with the New Democratic Party on many issues this year and I believe that MOTION-46 could be another important cooperation between these parties. I also believe that, with your political experience and long history of pioneering advocacy, your support of MOTION-46 would be particularly significant.
Like so many countries, Canada has been challenged by the terrible impact of COVID-19, but it has also demonstrated tenacity. Its government has worked to serve the needs of its people, and its people have worked to uplift one another. Surely those people deserve the support, safety and security of a Guaranteed Livable Basic Income? Can you commit to advocating for this issue and, by extension, advocating for the needs of so many working Canadians?
With my best wishes,
Paul Dean
Write to your representatives. Please. Particularly if you are in a position where you are able to advocate for others. Where possible, try to avoid using form letters, as those are easier to filter and, if the representative is disinclined to engage, easier to ignore.
