 Book Review: no spoilers

I wanted something quick to read, and this was the shortest book on my tbr. I bought this book for 50p in a damaged goods store in Harlow. I’ve been meaning to read it since I’ve read Goodnight, Mister Tom by Michelle Magorian, because both books I had read when I was about 10 years old, and I wanted to see if my opinion had changed. With this book, I hadn’t remembered a lot about it, so I had quite a low expectation but it did surprise me.

I liked the plot of the book. The writing did feel a bit simplistic (which also meant that it was an easy read, so it could be a good thing), because it is a children’s/middle grade book. The font was also a lot larger than I was used to, so I did feel a bit embarrassed reading it on the tube, but it didn’t stop me from reading it. I liked the characters, but I did feel like there was the possibility of more character development, especially with Michael’s parents.

One of my favourite things about this book is that the dog is called Stella Artois. It took me a second to realise that it was a larger, because the name rang a bell, but it didn’t click.

Overall, I give this book 7/10 or a 4/5. It was consistently a 3/5, but the bitter sweet ending increased the rating. It made me cry, which I was not expecting it too. I would recommend this book to younger children, especially younger boys, because I feel like it would capture their imagination, and they will want to know what happens. Older readers might find it lacking substance, but it is a good read if you want to reminisce your childhood. It is a good children’s book.
