48/100⠀ ⠀ In 1977 there was no such thing as being lactose intolerant, so even if milk made you sick and the smell made you want to throw up, you had to drink it, even if it was warm. Every day, in kindergarten, milk cartons were delivered outside our classroom door hours before we drank them. One day, I just couldn’t drink the milk without gagging. I casually dropped the full carton in the trash, hoping the teacher wouldn’t notice. She found the full milk and demanded to know to whom it belonged. I knew I couldn’t have been the only kid who couldn’t drink her milk. There had to be at least one other gagging kindergartener. I waited for the other kid to fess up. He or she never did, and because of them we lost recess that day.⠀ ⠀ Epilogue: little me carried the Catholic guilt weight of that for 13 years before I told another human and it was such a freeing release. A few months later, independent of the conversation, I was diagnosed lactose intolerant. My mom was increduluous.⠀ ⠀ Epilogue II: This year on Mother’s Day, I told my mom and oldest sister the kindergarten milk carton story. They were shocked, only because my sister couldn’t drink milk and got juice every day. I never knew!⠀ ⠀ #milk #lactoseintolerant #ilovecheese #postsecret #kindergarten #1970s #moojuice #the100dayproject #the100dayproject2018 #the100dayprojectOP #objectpermanence #significantobjects #stuff #tradingcard #tradingcards #affinitydesigner #virtualcabinetofcuriosities #art #autobiography #illustration
