Bottleneck
This railroad tunnel is 6 miles long and it cuts under the Continental Divide west of Denver Colorado. During World War II it was an important factor impacting the war in the pacific. Tens of thousands of US soldiers and their material needed to land across contested beaches and that required landing craft. So many landing craft were needed (nearly 100,000 worldwide) that extraordinary actions were called for. One of the strategies employed was to prefabricate landing craft sections in Denver, Colorado to be shipped by the trainload to Mare Island Naval shipyard for assembly. This tunnel limited the size of the sections that could be shipped, but in the end, it made little difference. Mare Island built so many tank landing craft (LCTs) in the building ways that, if they were laid end to end, they would stretch for 6 miles. Sadly, these LCTs would be the last piece of sovereign US territory that many service personnel would set foot on before being killed in action.

It's time for a Female Dr Who
I want to tell you a story. When I was 8 I lost my dad, he’d introduced me to Doctor Who just a few weeks before when it returned in 2005 as a show he loved when growing up and he really wanted it to be the same for me. After he died, I carried on watching the show and in hindsight I realised something. I had just lost the male role model in my life, an amazing dad who taught me above all else that a good man is strong when he needs to be, but kind all the time. But in those years after he died, the Doctor taught me the same lesson, the Doctor helped teach me what a good man looked like, to be strong and kind, never cruel or cowardly, and to think your way through life. I owe a lot to the brilliant writing and acting of that show in the Tennant era, I genuinely believe that, while less influential than the memory of my dad or my amazing mum, it helped shape who I am today. And my point is this, why can’t young girls growing up have that too. Moffett said we will always need a hero like the Doctor, and he’s absolutely right. But girls deserve heroes too. So please cast a woman this time, give those girls a hero to aspire to be like I had when I was 8, and help teach them to be strong when they need to be, and always be kind.
