There’s a bit of a spectrum when it comes to the transgender experience, but there are a few things that are more or less steady.

Discomfort with your name and pronouns

For example, if you were assigned as “female” at birth, you might feel uncomfortable or otherwise unhappy when called “miss,” “ma’am,” or “her.” You might feel a disconnect with your name.

Happiness or similar with a set of pronouns you aren’t usually called

On the other hand, you may feel better when people call you “mister,” “sir,” or “him.” It may “just feel right” or even make you smile.

Feeling more comfortable in clothes generally associated with a gender you weren’t assigned at birth

The clothes you normally wear might make you feel like you’re crossdressing, or just plain uncomfortable. Or maybe you’re fine with the clothes you normally wear, but wearing clothes that are “girly” when you’re assigned as male or “boyish” when you’re assigned as female might just overall feel better in your own skin.

Feeling more comfortable after a haircut or growing your hair out

There’s cultural significance in the western world regarding hair length. That’s not to say guys can’t have long hair and girls can’t have short, but it’s ingrained in us that it’s normally the other way around. Following the stereotype for the gender you aren’t assigned as could make you feel better.

Thinking you would prefer if you had physical attributes associated with a different gender

If you’re assigned as female, you might think you’d be happier if your chest was flatter or your genitals were different. Maybe you’d like your voice to be deeper or your jaw to be less round.

Granted, none of these on their own or even together 100% mean you’re transgender. But it’s still worth looking into if any of the above seems to click with you or describe your experiences. In the end, though, you’re the only one who can say for sure if you’re trans or cis.
