Day 140
I am getting involved with planning a walk and fundraiser for MMIW
Just going to out this here.
🔴 Someone set her shoes down at the edge of this road, side by side, laces still tied. They were found before she was. And the road went quiet.
This is where a family's search begins, at a pull-off on a highway that crosses more than one kind of line. In eastern Oklahoma, a rural road can pass through tribal land, county land, and state land within a few miles, and when a Native woman goes missing along it, the first question is almost never where is she. The first question is whose case is this. Tribal police, county sheriff, state troopers, and the FBI each hold a different piece of authority depending on where she was last seen, who owns the ground, and who is suspected. While the map is argued over, the hours that matter most slip away.
The numbers behind this pull-off are staggering. Native women face some of the highest rates of violence in the country, with more than four in five experiencing violence in their lifetime, and in some communities murder is among the leading causes of death for Native women. Cases are routinely delayed, misclassified, or lost between agencies. A woman can vanish from a place where everyone knows her name and still fall through a system that was never built to find her fast.
So the family does the work themselves. They laminate the flyer. They tie the red cloth to the fence. They light the candle and place the cedar and come back to the road again and again, because they refuse to let her become a case that no one claimed. The shoes stay where they were found, side by side, waiting for the person who should still be wearing them.
If this one sits heavy with you, let it stay a while, and hold space for the women who never made it home. 🤍
I know in the United States the focus is on BLM and Palestine and us Indigenous are an after thought. Look at us as well.
Me: Wears a jacket with MMIWM on the back of it in sovereignty.
Dumbasses on campus: What does that mean?
Me: Explains.
Dumbasses: Gives empty blank stare in confusion.
If people can wear BLM stuff then why can’t I wear this? How do people understand one acronym and not the other even when it is explained.
