i agree with the whole hate minata thing but you know what bugs me about it, it's that if mineta was a conventionally attractive character he wouldn't be getting this hate. I've seen it everywhere, people defending scummy characters to the end of the earth just cus they look good- characters (in other series') who've done worse things than mineta and are overall generally grosser than mineta. I don't like Mineta, but this fact's been naggin at my mind for the duration ive been in this fandom for

Anon… oh anon….. you have unveiled a problem that I have been on the cusp of for ages, but was never quite able to put my finger on. I agree completely – there are plenty of instances in anime where a handsome character is perverted but it’s seen as some sort of….. quirky little aspect of his personality (no pun intended), and it’s never addressed as a problem in canon or by the fandom either. And ya, let’s face it, if these characters were not conventionally attractive, the fandom probably would have torn them apart, but we don’t see that happen too often…. hmm.
I mean, look at Kaminari. Of course, he’s not perverted on nearly the same level as Mineta, but he has had some extremely problematic moments and then fandom still loves him! In fact, I’ve seen like, a total of one (1) post critiquing him with the cheerleading uniform fiasco, and I’m sure there were more, but I’m not seeing a fandom-wide hate-fest against our precious sparky pichu son. And that’s just one example, from the same series.
Mineta and characters like him deserve criticism. If we don’t want to see characters like them in the future, or if we want to see these characters grow and develop past their perverse nature, then we need to speak up about it and let the anime and manga community know. But if we’re gonna do that, we need to be critical of every character that’s like this. Yes, even the funny, endearing, handsome ones.
