JudgeCast picks their list of worst triggered abilities in Magic. We look at why triggers have sometimes caused problems in tournaments starting with Horizon Spellbomb and ending with⌠Well, youâll just have to listen and find out!
Sanction Draft. Player F has Sin Prodder out. On one turn he drew his cards normally. He obviously missed his trigger. I told F that he forgot his trigger. Both players reminded me not to say anything. Why not? I shouldn't point out miss play?
Players are responsible for remembering their own triggers. The opponent of F is allowed to just let him miss Sin Prodderâs trigger. You mentioning it makes F aware of it and less likely to miss it again.
If you were Fâs opponent, youâd be free to remind him of the trigger, but since youâre not a part of the match, itâs bordering on Outside Assistance for you to do so. Please donât remind players in other matches about their triggers.
This only applies to triggers, though, so you should mention other mistakes if you see them happen, though itâs usually just best to just ask the players to wait while you get a judge and talk to the judge away from the table.
So I'm having some trouble understanding how madness works spatially. So, if I discard a card that has madness, do I put it in exile, temporarily, until I decide whether or not I want to play the card for its madness cost? And once I decide not to pay the cost, it moves to the graveyard? When I think of discard, I think of graveyard, but the way madness is worded, doing that would count as a missed trigger and I'd have forfeited the madness ability.
You have the mechanics correct here. The card goes from hand to exile, then either to the stack or the graveyard from exile, depending on if you cast it or not.
Forgetting to exile a madness card isnât just missing a trigger, though. The card goes to exile because of a replacement effect. At a competitive REL event, forgetting to exile the card would earn you a warning for committing a Game Rule Violation. It would only be a missed trigger if you left the card hanging around in exile, and in that case the card would just be put into your graveyard since thatâs the default action for the madness trigger.
At GPATL, an opponent missed an ingest trigger, passed the turn, I untap, draw a land, and play it. *OOPS, I missed that ingest, call a judge* Judge says to now exile a card from my hand at random. Seems a bit harsh. Is this correct?
Thatâs not what should have happened. You should have has the option to put the ingest trigger on the stack if you wanted to, and that should have been the end of it.

Hi, I just played in my first vintage event and boy do I have a lot of rules questions. If my opponent has tangle wire with 3 counters in play and I untap, say "draw," get a yes from my opponent, and then draw, what happens? It was ruled that since it's a mutually detrimental trigger it has to happen, I was given a warning for failure to maintain game state, and my opponent was given a GRV. How would you have resolved this? Thanks :)
Your opponent missed their trigger and shouldnât have been able to resolve Tangle Wireâs effect. Tangle Wireâs tapping ability is a parallel effect, so itâs detrimental for your opponent on their own turn, but not detrimental on your turn. The judge should have given you the option to put the trigger on the stack if you wanted and no penalty should have been issued.
Also, Failure to Maintain Game State should never be issued for a missed trigger, even if the other player receives a warning.
Assuming the situation is as you described, then the judge made the wrong call here.
