#triggered abilities

when we play tidebinder, our opponent's soul warden will trigger. can we counter this trigger with our tidebinder?

only on our opponent's turn.

both triggers will happen at the same time. so they will attempt to be put onto the stack at the same time. however because they are different players' triggers, they are put onto the stack in apnap order.

we also need to know that we choose targets as the trigger is being put onto the stack.

imagine we have a dredgers insight and we escape uro by exiling at least one creature or artifact. how many triggers do we get?

we get two triggers.

first we note that dredgers insight says "one or more". so if we exile five creatures with uro we would only get one trigger from that. we just need to find out if uro leaves the graveyard at the same time as the other cards get exiled.

we all know you cant stifle dark depths (itll just trigger again). but can we tidebinder it? (or trickbind for that matter)

sort of. the ability gets countered and triggers once more, but then can be stifled properly.

dark depths' ability is a state trigger. which means it will trigger whenever the described state (no ice counters) exists.

... but that cant be right. right? if thats right then it will trigger, then trigger again, and again, and again, ad infinitum. because the state will always exist.

so theres one more thing to state triggers, they dont trigger so long as long as their ability has triggered and hasnt left the stack. but as soon as it leaves the stack it will trigger again. (see cr 603.8 for info on state triggers)

now back to tidebinder. it enters and counters the trigger, removing it from the stack (cr 701.6. all countering does is remove crap from the stack). then theres a full stop (aka a period aka this thang .), which indicates that thats all one action, and what happens next is another action (cr 608.2e). then we make dark depths lose all abilities.

we have a blood moon style effect and play a dark depths, then we flicker the blood moon. do we get a marit lage?

first, does dark depths enter with ice counters? no it doesnt. replacement effects (like on dark depths or shock lands) check how the card would exist on the battlefield (see CR 614.12 for info). and on the battlefield dark depths has no effect to give itself counters.

really what it says on the tin. do we get the marit lage or not if we remove all counters, +1/+1 and all, from the dark depths?

nope. well, not without a little bit of help.

what happens is the dark depths becomes a 0/0 and will trigger, then it will die to SBAs. after that its trigger will be put on the stack and we will try and sac it. because it has died already, it will not be sacced. but its trigger says "if you do" sac it then you get the marit lage.

if we have the following three permanents with four quest counters on the ascension, how many times does firebending trigger on loyal fire sage?

four!

the way ability doublers work is they basically go "oh you want to do that? you get to do that twice!" this does not change the cause of the trigger existing. it just gives you additional triggers. and so we get two firebending triggers from attack, then two copies of these firebending triggers that arent from attack.

While you can stack the triggers so that Termagant Swarm's ability resolves first, you have to choose a target for Death Presence's trigger when you put it on the stack.
