I recently had my first therapist visit, followed shortly by my first psychiatrist visit. I like my therapist, but something felt off at the psych. It's like we didn't trust each other, and I don't think they took me seriously. How many visits should I give them before I try a new one?
In my experience, psychiatrists tend to be more clinical and not as warm as tak therapists. Once I figured out that a psychiatrist is probably going to be a little more distant and clinical than my therapist, I was able to feel more comfortable with that relationship.
That said, I had a consultation with a doctor a few years ago that just did not go well. He was very cold and disinterested, and he made me feel like I was taking up too much of his time with my questions, so I did not make a follow-up appointment, and continued looking for a doctor, until I found the doctor I have now.
Only you can decide if you just felt weird, or if that doctor isn’t a good match for you. My advice is to trust your instincts, and remember that you are under no obligation to continue seeing a doctor who doesn’t make you feel comfortable.
