What do you consider to be social consciousness and how do you feel it gets instilled in classrooms such that it shouldn't be (if that makes sense)?
(re: one of miseriathome’s posts that I responded to) (not sure if okay to link)
I don’t have a formal definition or anything, but what I inferred was that social consciousness was something like class consciousness? Like, “society is set up into these different classes of people and the *archy definitely exists and must be dismantled” is the sense I’m getting from the phrase.
I’m not averse to things like this being taught as things people believe or even as well-supported theories. I am averse to professors going to teach, idk, sociology courses or lit courses with the idea, “I’m going to instill in students a sense of revolutionary passion”.
I suppose that I’m less uncomfortable with “I’m going to teach students to recognize the oppressions extant in our culture”, but I am still not happy about professors teaching that.
Of course, things that are true ought to be taught no matter how Controversial they are. E.g. evolutionary biology professors probably do need to assume that evolution is true even if that’s a ~hot-button issue~.
And it’s true that “the political center” is arbitrarily defined and often biased in favor of the status quo or in favor of those in power.
And it’s also true that things like, say, white supremacy, are pretty clearly real things that need to be analyzed and that exist, and that analyses based on class are true in some respects and even occasionally useful.
But there’s something that really bothers me about the idea of professors wanting to sway students to their political side.
I think that the problem I had with your original phrasing was that the goal, in my opinion, of teaching things should not be to convince people to agree with a particular political perspective. It should be to expose them to a quality argument for the political perspective and then allow them to make their own decision.
(Disclaimer: I am not in college, I am not any kind of Academic Sociologist person, I am an amateur on the internet with an interest in Social Justice(TM) who had a few shitty ideologue high school social studies/lit teachers.)
