Started reading Dan Ariely's Misbelief for a project, and unfortunately it's pretty good.
I don't trust him because (1) I don't know that he's ever fully grappled with the replication crisis and (2) he's been basically caught probably engaging in flagrant data fabrication.
But the book is good and has some passages I might want to quote. Even though I don't want to trust him on any factual claims!
Etrit's Internal Conflict
So, I've been watching a lot of Abbie Emmons's videos (shout out to her because I absolutely freakin' love her content!), and I've struggled in trying to write the perfect internal conflict (desire, fear, and misbelief) for my main character's (Etrit) internal conflict for about 2 months. I refused to start writing my book without knowing that I feel comfortable with my character's internal conflict and that it fits well with my side characters.
I've re-watched Abbie's "What's the Difference between Fear and Misbelief?" video several times. She explains really well. I've had to physically take down notes of the examples she uses.
It wasn't until today that I found the internal conflict that I wanted. I must've rewritten his internal conflict about 5 times (while also writing my side characters' internal conflicts). That's why I was trying to have Etrit and my side characters fit together. And a theme that I wanted to say.
I find it best for myself to figure things out in this order: Desire, Fear, Misbelief, Theme.
Just so you know, I plan to introduce one of my side characters this Sunday. I'm excited to introduce her. I'm excited to introduce all of them really. I love all of them. It's hard to pick a favorite, but I know Etrit is my baby.
Once upon a time, there lived an unhappy boy, thinking of escaping from this sad world all the time. The other night, he had a dream that he became a spaceman. And he finally left the Earth and traveled to a small yellow planet. However, as his spaceship was broken, he was stuck there. Then the adventure started.
