One episode, the team starts fighting this mysterious newcomer Red X who has been making deals and stealing for Slade in order to gain his trust, only for the team to find out that Red X was actually Robin (who has been gradually crashing out this entire season over not being able to track down Slade), trying to go undercover as a bad guy without informing anyone. The crash-out continues until the apprentice arc at the end of Season 1, where Slade threatens to use nanobots to kill the his friends if Robin doesn't join him.

Red X appears again seasons later, as a mysterious someone who stole the identity and serves as a bitter reminder of how bad Robin crashed out. The identity of this person is never revealed, though there was a running gag in shorts and stuff about Beast Boy being fully convinced it's an anachronistic Jason Todd. I hear Titans Academy's decision to use Red X was to capitalize on the popularity of Red X from the show, and the unanswered mystery of his identity.
